Perusing the local pawn shop, and I saw a Canon Mark II digital SLR for $2,149.00. This is state of the art camera technology, and all the pros rave about it. Anyone used one?

I'm a gadget junkie so I am tempted. Is this a good deal?

Mk II what?

5dMkII?

1ds Mk II?

There is a Photography sub-forum for this. At least you are smart and looking at Canon

I didn't realize there is a photography forum here. I love Canon cameras - they are the best. I have just owned point-and-shoot types though. 5D Mk II - those are good?

5dMkII is a very good full frame camera. There is a Mk III version out though.

The price seems high for a used 5d, unless it has some goodies. B&H has them new for 2199.

Does that include lens or just the body?

Good job on the 5dmkII. Good camera.

I'm a professional photographer and also was a Combat Photographer in the Corps. I currently use a Canon 1DsIII and have used the 5dII, 5d, 1DsII, 1Dii, 20D-50D, and 7d.

Prime lenses are where it's at. I don't use any zoom lenses anymore.

Body only..... that is the "goodies" part. The lenses is where the money is. 2k on the body is nothing, when one lens can cost more than the body.

Pawn shop had both the lens and the body.

is it a body only? body and lens? what lens? what accessories?

main thing is its used, find out how many shutter actuations are on it.  not sure how to do it on a canon, but it would be something id really wanna know before buying a used dslr.

What lens really matters. Consider a gun with a scope. The type of scope can seriously impact the value of the package.

Log onto a site like B and H Photo.  You can use it to check pricing.  If you can find it new for about the same price I would use them and buy new.  I have always had good service from them.  I recently went digital and got a Pentax K5 DSLR from them new for $999.  I ordered on a Thursday and it arrive at my house the next Tuesday.  That was with free shipping too.

I went Pentax because I have some awesome Pentax glass I have picked up over the last 25 years.  So far I am very happy with the camera.

Stick w/ the Canon primes such as the 80mm f/1.2, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4, etc... Better clarity, faster, better boketh, etc.. than the zooms.

And regarding the Canon/Nikkon shit, it's like comparing a Glock to a M&P: user preference. Both have strengths and weaknesses that cancel each other out.

OK thanks

My GF really prefers Nikon, says they have more vivid color reproduction. Anyway, I don't know...

There are primes that aren't L lenses. They may be a good start to see if you even enjoy their use. Same could be said about the 5d, as a 7d (cropped sensor) may be a better start.

It doesn't matter. Shooting RAW means you'll be post-processing anyway.

If you get serious with it, you'll want the L lenses. I started that way so as not to waste $ on the lower lenses.

Additionally, I'll tell you that full-frame sensors are the way to stick. Don't go crop-sensor, as you'll hate losing part of your lenses effective area.

Rebel series don't count in this discussion versus D80-90. Those are two different classes of camera. Compare those to the 60D Canon series.

I see I wrote F800. I meant D800

And I do think it will make a nice Birthday present to myself.

"Never let your camera outperform your talents"  That's a quote I've rather enjoyed and I'll recommend you get a starter camera like one of the Rebels from Canon.  Focus on getting good glass instead of a super expensive body.  As long as you're not trying to take super low light photos without a tripod it won't make enough of a difference when starting out to justify the expense.

That's too much for a used 5DMkII, they sell for $1700ish used body only now that the MkIII came out.

Yeah, I'm shooting with a 50D.  That thing has GREAT AF, fast and has great color range.

The rebel class isn't even in the same league.  Nikon vs. Canon is kind of like the Stihl vs Husky vs Echo, 9mm v .45, etc.  They are both great cameras.  They both have great lenses backing their main lens systems.  You can't really go wrong.  Once you choose, you will realize you have become the world's biggest fanboi of that particular system.

I love Canon, and I will only buy canon cameras.  HOWEVER, that's more because I am better in tune with how to operate a Canon camera over a nikon.

I shoot Nikon, but this goes true for either brand - go somewhere and handle a couple of each brand, take a few shots, etc.  See how they feel in your hands - control layout, grip style, etc.

The reason I chose Nikon was because the control layout just made sense to me much more than the Canon bodies I tried.  You really can't go too wrong with either system.  I also far preferred the autofocus over the Canon models at the time, and I still love the flash system above the Canon ecosystem.

If you're just starting out, and not sure if you'll really love it, I'd suggest getting an older body, but maybe investing in some higher quality glass.  The glass you can use as you upgrade through the future, and will hold it's value FAR better than any body.

If you're just starting, grab a zoom, a 50mm prime, a bunch of memory cards, and go nuts.  Find out what you enjoy - people, landscapes, sports, etc.

Photography is like firearms - you wallet will be crying no matter what

careful with the canon vs. nikon debate, photogs love to argue about that one. the 5D MKII is a great camera, don't mind the fact that it's not the current model. however that asking price is kind of high just for the body. you should try to get what the shutter count is.

Hell, even the original 5D is still considered one hell of a great camera.  Can't do video, but the images are spectacular!  And now their prices are dropping too.  You can pick up a good low mileage 5D for $850 now.
I shoot with a 5D and have a 7D I haven't used in over a year.   I was about to advertise it on POTN, but now everyone is dumping everything to buy 5D MkIII's.  Not a good market for sellers now.
