Whether it be jujitsu, shooting, driving, academics, etc I have problems absorbing material presented by an instructor. I can sit through an entire class, take notes, listen closely to the professor and then leave the class having no idea what I just learned. It's like stuff went in one ear and went out another. Same for when I am at a shooting, driving, or ju jitsu class. I almost am on a delay, when it seems the entire class is picking up something I am barely grasping it. Now I am not saying I can't master something but I have to teach it to myself.

I can absorb an enormous amount of information in a short period of time, but don't retain most of it.

So you can retain it for the short term (ie long enough to be tested on it)?

a tutor or a friend + practice will solve your problem

Yes. I could cram for an exam in school and walk away with an 'A' on the test, but heck if I remember a lot of it a month later.

Is there any particular style of teaching or teaching method that works consistently better for you than others?

Not everyone learns the same. There are different categories of learners, like kinesthetic, visual, etc.

You say you do better teaching yourself... Does that mean you do better when things are more hands-on rather than lecture-based?

How about a poll that asks how many times a person has been married.

I'm the exact same way. If I can see some thing being physically done it helps alot.

Almost any skill I have I had to teach myself. It's really the best way for me to learn.

I also think that a good teacher helps. No matter how well intentioned someone is, their teaching style and your learning style might not mesh.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger,       ALSO; being the type of person who figures things out for themself is a virtue.   BD

ETA; I didn't read all the replies before responding, I'm on the same page as Jarhead, in my assesment of your post.

I start to pay attention and all of a sudden my focus drifts away..struggled with it all the way through grad school but I found ways to compensate.  Strange thing was that I had an unusual knack for picking up trivia.

No worries OP, I can read all there is to know on a subject and retain nothing. Now if I have hand on training, I will master in a short amount of time. I suck at school. Real world is a different story.

Oddly enough the best way I found to learn was with flashcards and memorization. That might work for highschool but not so much in college with more advanced and abstract stuff.

Haven't found one, other than having the instructor go over it one on one with me.

Neither I think. I am taking motorcycle lessons and I am having a hell of a time retaining knowledge. Even the most basic stuff I am having trouble with.

Yes, I have trouble learning things as it is presented in a typical classroom setting, but if I can do it with my hands I can usually learn it.

Needless to say I hated school.

My twin sister has severe learning disabilities. I did very well in high school and then had an extremely tough time in college. I got tested to see if I had a learning disability. From the test results the Dr. ended up telling me I should have graduated from high school and even more so from college with better grades. He said I was an underachiever and I should have studied more.

I remember nearly everything except math. I don't have complete recall though. That kind of thing is creepy and usually a sign of a brain disorder believe it or not.

I pick things up faster with a hands on style of learning then I do in a lecture/classroom type of setting.  I am also dyslexic, so that probably plays a big factor in my case.  I didn't have a problem in the Army though, most of the training is hands on anyway, and the small amount that wasn't I picked up pretty well because I got tired of doing all those pushups.

What is your diet like? If you're not getting enough things like Omega-3 in your diet that can affect learning. Also, are you getting enough quality sleep? If your brain isn't producing enough melatonin and or you're not sleeping enough your brain can't sort through and store all the information from the previous day correctly. The better your sleep and the more of it you get, the better you can retain information.

When I was in school I had shitty sleep and diet.

For me, the two things that matter are the instructor, and my aptitude in that subject.

Sometimes the instructor just doesn't present something so I can understand it.
I had a great history teacher in college.  He presented things in a way that explained why things happened.  For me, other history teachers just made me memorize dates and names.

My dear wife can spend an hour explaining why a room needs painting, but I just can't understand how to pick out colors.  Not that she's doing a bad job explaining, but I have no aptitude in that subject.

That probably had a lot to do with it. Try taking several fish oil capsules a day and melatonin at night.

In college it generally ended up me not having enough hours in a day to study even though all I did those four years was study.
