Okay, here's my problem ...

I've written a novel on Microsoft Word, burned it to a disc to download on my main computer.

The main computer does not have Word; it only has Word Perfect installed.  But it converged and opens up as Word Perfect––no biggie.

Now, as I go through and proofread the manuscript, I've been trying to make changes.  Some of the paragraphs are too long and need to be split.  When I do this, I click in front of the word I would like to start the new paragraph with, and then hit ENTER.  This, obviously, drops it down a line.  But when I hit the TAB button, it inevitably knocks the entire paragraph over to the TAB space.  It will not maintain the left margin, and instead of pushing the first line over and knocking the excess words down to the second line, it just shoves the entire paragraph over and gets everything out of whack.

Anyone know what's going on?

I actually have the disk––Works Suit 2002 (which includes WORD).

But the damn thing doesn't want to download; instead of downloading the entire suite, I chose CUSTOM to download only WORD.  It keep going through the process, yet without actually downloading anything.  I can't figure it out.

Alright.  What IS Open Office?

A free downloadable suite of programs that basically does most of the things MS Office does but is free and works with MS Office file formats.

If its the version of Works that has Word with it, there will be an install for Word on (usually) the first CD.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!

Sometimes this place is just too uncanny.  I've spent the last hour trying to import Word from a different computer to revise my English Comp papers for final turn-in, and I had just about given up and resigned myself to having to go to campus and bang them out manually.  Of course, I just had to check what was brewing in GD before I fent, and here's this thread.

Open Office it is.

Hivemind can be kinda creepy sometimes.  Useful, but creepy

Firstly, how can I shut down McAfee?––it won't let me download anything.

You need a can of hairspray and a lighter for that...

So once I download this Open Office, I can slip my MS Word burned disc in, and it'll open without any alteration to the format?

Also, how might a manuscript on Open Office effect things when I have to email samples or submissions to an agent?  Might there be compatibility issues?

Screw it!  Now "Window's Installer" is fucking up––and is obviously the cause of things not being able to download.

Now how do you fix that?!

1. OpenOffice is great.  One of my many work functions is IT stuff (limited) and when I am too cheap for a license for Office I install OpenOffice and it works well with Word.
2. Google (If you have a gmail account) also has a Word compatible editor that works pretty good.
3. Lastly if you have a great deal of time invloved in the manuscript and you created it in Word then I would not skimp.  I would get Word to eliminate all potential problems with formatting a document in different programs.  In the long run the $150 or so is worth the expense.
4. If you want to start from scratch then OpenOffice will serve you well.

I didn't see him mention MSWorks anywhere in there....

WordPerfect is NOT a Microsoft product

Last I checked, it was owned by COREL.

We had word perfect on the Air Force's computers in the 80s...that's the LAST time I've heard of anyone accually using it.

Correct, but in this case not important.

I just opened a bunch of WordPerfect files with Open Office and they work great.

As a side note:  if anyone is having trouble with their Windows Installer, and it's not allowing things to download, it may need to be registered again.

So, if you are having the same problem I was, do this...

1. open a command prompt:

2. Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter.

3. Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter.

This re-registers your windows installer, and allows downloading again.

Just my daily dose of pass-on info.

I was in DC when the Marines decided to use Lotus' SmartSuite when the rest of the DoD went to MS Office.  That was great fun.
