Seriously.... I have several old screwdrivers/chisels...etc....when you open the tool box it radiates a smell that is best describes as "monday morning frat house basement..."  Tool box is not the issue... conducted scientific experiment that proves the smell is radiating from the plastic handles ... (experiment consisted of me asking the neighbors kids to smell test the items in question )  Anybody else have puke scented tools?

AvE explains this in one of his vijayos. I don't remember what it is, something with the plastic, obviously.

I've got some that smell funky.  I always wondered if it was mold/mildew or something.

Seems to be clear plastic handles, i.e. my Craftsman sets,  are particularly stinky.

The Stanley screwdrivers at my parents' house stink up the tool box.

No. Mine are masked by blood and grease.

Yep. I've noticed this for a long time. It seems to happen with screwdrivers that I don't use as often. But maybe it's brand specific. I do know that the screwdriver drawer at home which is filled with mostly Craftsman and old Husky reeks, but my drawer at work which is mostly Klein doesn't stink. There's way older screwdrivers in my home tool box than my work box. I can't stand that smell though. I want to dip them screwdrivers in some lacquer thinner or something.

no.
My only plausible theory is that you once asked a FSA member with an aversion to work to use your tools in exchange for capital.
the ensuing nausea and projectile vomit of a combination of laziness, entitlement, pop tarts, coors light, and tax dollars leaves an impermeable film upon anything it touches.
if you ever see him again, id advise against asking to borrow his obamaphone even if your life depends on it.

XCELITE brand plastics all stink to high hell. Even brand new, but they don't break or crack, so... Small price to pay i guess.

butyric acid.   same acid in your gut that makes vomit smell the way it does.   its used to make some plastics and adds great chemical and UV resistant qualities.

really one of the only tid bits i remember from college chem

What, you never had to use a screwdriver to empty your guts for the next 20 pack. No one wants a greasy finger in their mouth.

Hmmmm.   My dogs paws smell like stale doritos, specifically the nacho cheese flavor.

I have a small set of Craftsman nut drivers that belonged to my father, they are probably 35 years old. For the longest time they were really stinky. I just went out to the toolbox in the garage and
smelled them , and they don't seem that bad anymore, but it's cold in there right now, and my nose might be messed up from the weather.

ETA: answered above, huh never knew that.

And I just always assumed my cat barfed on my screwdriver at some point.

I've had these since early 90's. Still smell like a fresh dogpile.

I've not experienced any "nasty smelling tools" but that surplus GI poncho I got sure smelled like baby puke left out in the hot sun.

Open up my screwdriver drawer and you'd be hit with the smell of vomit.
