Yesterday I scored my 8th US Flag.
After the 9-11 terrorist attach everyone went out and bought flags to show thier patriotism. It kinda made You proud to be an American seeing all this patriotism. But, since then I have picked up 8 US Flags off city streets from those plastic flag poles that hook on car windows that have broken and fell to the ground. I have nothing against the people that lost the flags as most likely they didn't notice when/where they lost thier flags. My problem is with all the assholes that are driving by the US flags lying in the street. I'm not talking about interstate highways where you would literally risk your life trying to pick it up, I'm talking about city streets where the average speed is only 25-35MPH. One I rescued was driven over by no less than 6 cars before I could get to it. Yesterday's flag, I found along side a public highschool and by the time I was able to make a U-turn to pick it up at least 50 students also walked passed it without giving it a second look. Most of the others had many cars pass them before I saw it and stopped. |
|
I have not seen any, but from what you say, this is very disturbing to me. I'll keep a look out for them. No cars should be running over Our Flag.
|
|
I thought maybe I was the only one outraged by this. As a confirmed "flag waver" long before 9-11-'01, I have picked up several, including one yesterday sticking out of my neighbor's garbage can! I have a gun collector's meeting next tuesday night at the VFW hall, so I will take it there for proper retirement. If I suddenly stop posting it will probably be because I got my ass flattened on the road picking a flag up. [pissed]
|
|
OK you shamed me into getting it fixed. Last night a big wind blew through and broke the cheap metal pole my flag is afixed to. Figured I would fix it over the weekend. What a lazy ass of all days not to have my flag flying. Job done shes flying again. Bt the way I always have my flag flying, didn't take 9/11 for me.

Here in San Francisco all you see are rainbow flags. On every lampost on every street, on every shop sign, everywhere. Gay Rainbow flags everywhere.
The worst is the ones that take the US Flag and make the red and white stripes the color of the rainbow. That makes me sick. |

You should tear them down, they are blasphemy. Okay, now that I've taken a few deep breaths,,, I'll go back to sleep now. Princeton, you really pointed out an important thing. I've noticed one or two and didn't even think about it. Pretty shameful. I'll stop and pick them up the next time. |

Another issue is that many of flags tied to car arials are now shredded from 3 months of driving, but haven't been removed.
The flag is not a decoration, it is a symbol of national pride. It is not just something to hang on your car. Personal story...in the parking lot of the local supermarket, I saw a woman get out of her car (flag attached to the arial), and when she closed her door, the Flag was closed in the door jamb. I said something to the effect of "Ma'am, your flag is caught in the door". Her response was, "Oh, that's OK, it does that all the time."[stick] The flag is meant to fly free (for obvious reasons), not to be treated like an air freshner in your car. [soapbox] |

Princeton, That is very American of you. Keep up the good work, but watch out for city buses and taxis when you rescue Old Glory. In my town I haven't seen any flags on the streets yet, but I am very sad to report the diminishing number of flags flying these days. The reality is that true Americans never needed an event like 9-11 to show thier patriotism. They never needed a flag either, but it does look sweet when you fly her high and it takes on a special meaning to those who have served thier country, not just the military, but in any capacity at all. We also feel that any attack against the United States is an attack against us personally. Many of us already suspect that the sudden patriotic boom which occured after the attacks is most likely going to die out after a while. That is why my flag will ALWAYS fly, not only to remember this horrific event, but also to show the rest of the people who see my flag that there are still a number of true Americans out there who will always love this country for what it is, not necessarily for what it is becoming, but in the true spirit of our countries Founders.

In the dinky little one-stopsign town out in the sticks that I live in, where they can't afford to pave all the roads (I live on a dirt road), they found the money to replace the several dozen flags flying along our "main" street at the same time they were hanging the Christmas lights. I'm not planning on moving any time soon......

I only have one flag and it is a rescued one. I
was driving several years ago and I saw someone taking down a flag and as I drove by, he threw it in a trash can. I went back and took it out. And asked him if I could have it. It, unfortunately, has to be kept inside. Because not many people approve of me flying the Confederate colors. |

I also picked on up on the side of the road. I don't fly one on my trucks for that reason. The military registration stickers on them say what I have to say. John

Gee, I said 2 months ago that the upsurge in flag waivers (the same sheeple that don't give a damn about the Constitution) was due to fear and not patriotism. Hell, I even got chastized here for even bringing up that point.
Displaying the flag was just a fad to the sheeple and nothing else. Now that it is getting old they will move on to some other new "cause". |

Yup, saw one of the flags you hold up by rolling up your window--someone must have rolled down their window and out it went. Laying in the middle of an intersection...
I told you it was all easy sentiment with no substance. These flag wavers are voting for wholesale socialism and gun control. |

My Brother and I stopped in the middle of the two way on a rainy day to pick up a flag that was being run over. Its our duty as Americans to take care of and show respect for our flag. It is the symbol of our nation!

It is good to see that I am not the only one who rescues Flags. I had to turn around and drive back to where I saw the flag but at least it did not look like the flag had been run over yet. I rolled it up on what was left of the plastic pole that it was attached to. I still have it in my house and I can’t see myself burning it so I will keep it until I can have it disposed of properly by the VFW or American Legion. The only Flags I have on my truck are two flag images I printed up and taped to the inside of my rear side windows this way when I need to remove them I can dispose of them properly instead of scraping them of like the decals I was thinking about.

I've never seen a broken flag in the streets here, but I have seen a few in the center divider of the main highway. That's an eight lane freeway and there's NO WAY I'm going after them.

I would like to hear that LEOs are doing the same.
Any LEOs out there reading this? |

Saw another one in the middle of a busy road when I was headed to the mall today.
I know what the flag means to some of you guys, but I don't think you should risk your butts in its name (or what it stands for) anymore than you already have. Our flag has come to symbolize greed, warmongering, powermongering, fearmongering, waste and stupidity as much as anything else nowadays. I can't say I respect this nation's leadership and I will not follow them or their edicts if I am to be increasingly left out of the process. Remember "no taxation without representation"? Well, we have that and more in spades. All the mindless fools plastering flags all over everything fail to realize that their statism is just another type of insidious religion. I hope they someday wake up and recognize the hell they've helped to create. I'm not banking on it though. I'm also not rescuing the few remaining symbols of the old reality, either. Fight the mind control! |
|
Interesting you should mention this, I picked one up off the highway the other day (Tuesday I think it was) First one I seen on the road.

The whole concept of not letting the flag touch the ground escapes me. Is the flag "Holy"? In Jewish times there were extensive laws concerning the care of the Temple articles, but the United States is not an institution based in its worship of God, nor is the flag the symbol of a Deity. Jewish religion was based on becoming closer to God by observance to "The Law". But in God's eye observance of law made no one holy, because "The Law" was singular. If you broke it in the smallest way you were guilty of breaking it all.
Not getting your flag dirty doesn't make you a better American. Helping someone facing tyranny does. |
|
I have adopted several American flags since 9/11/01. One of them is is pretty big on a wooden pole. I kinda pisses me off that people either drop them or let them fall of their cars. It's upsetting to see our flag laying in a puddle, I don't care how small it is, nor where it was made.
|
|
Personally, I find this subject rather silly. The real flag has a real flagpole and is displayed with respect in places where there is a real reverence for it. Driving around with a Made in China plastic flag on one's car just is an expression of popular culture. I'm not going to chase these things, when like litter, they fly on the wind down the street. In my mind, there's no disrespect here; what do you expect from this widespread national expression anyway? Proper Etiquette? Adherence to the rules?
I rather see the red, white, and blue representation of the flag flutter in the streets like ticker tape left over from this sort of national "parade" than to think patriotism is no longer acceptable. Hell, I'm more concerned whether these people are paying attention and driving with regard to public safety instead of talking on their cell phones than whether they know about flag display protocol. Did I mention Sheeple? Mass consumerism? Ignorant Middle American values? |

Guys,
If you need to burn a flag properly, contact your local cubscout or boy scout troop and talk with the scoutmaster. I can still remember when we had a BSA guy come to our troop and demonstrate the proper way to retire a flag. It also gives the kids an idea of what to do and why we do retire them. They will point out that it isn't something you just do for the fun of it, but that it is a ceremony and very formal. |

oh crap do we have to do this.....? I flipped an answer after a long weekend and everyone wants to come in here and bash my head in....first,
there was NO difference between north and south regarding colour and slavery. Honest Abe was possibly one of the biggest war criminals in our history and he made sure that the states had no rights. By invading them... Now on the question of slavery, please people it was wrong then and it is still wrong today, but I don't see any of you advocating invading Ethiopia to stop slavery. So let's admit that the war was caused by numerous causes social and economic and get over the hot-button replies. And, to cut you off before you get started, don't address me as some flag-waving KKK skinhead. I've always thought that the KKK was the stupidest idea that the Masons ever came up with and I agree with none of the ideas or principles. Yep I have read Mr. Albert Pike and he is a cracked pot. And skinheads are beneath contempt. So to defend my statement. The Confederate states went to war to protect the land and civilization of the south....however wrong it may have been thought to be by people in the South. And the Confederate army was soundly beaten and the people were ruled by dictators sent from the North...sound familiar? Ok fire away...get it all out |
|
What can I say. I apologize. You have made your point, and I agree with you. I live in Florida (which some consider to be part the 'Deep South') and most of the idiots waving their Confederate flags still think the war is on, not to mention the hate crimes happening every day.
|
|
That war is over and ANYONE who attacks someone because of the colour of their skin should be shot. Stupid herd mentality of the worst sort.
We were just having a discussion at work about the political and religious tactic of someone saying..."see THOSE people, They are BAD" Stupidest and seemingly the most effective tactic that organizations have ever come up with. Oh well...In the mis-quoted words of my imaginary friend-little garandman---one day we will gather by the river and hopefully all this will pass away.... |

Believe me , I realize that these things happen the world over. Doesn't matter what you call it. Whether it be religion, race, social status, whatever, these things happen every day. You just don't see it in the papers. But as long as we have people preaching hate and passing it down to their children, it will never stop. That would be asking for an ideal world, which we know will never happen. I didn't want to get into a pissing match over this. My original intent was to find out what the Confederate flag meant to hound. So now I know. I have a reason for not liking certain things related to the Confederate flag. it stood for one thing back then, but now most of the stupid rednecks think it stands for racism. Why should all this concern me? Especially since I am your average white male working a white-collar job? Simple. My wife is black. Whenever we're together, I can see the way she is treated by some. Since I'm with her, I get it as well. Does it matter? Sometimes it gets to us, but we knew what we were getting into 11 years ago when we married and would do it again if given the opportunity.
Where was I? Oh yeah... I'll get off my soapbox now... enough ranting. Point of all this? Racism (or any other prejudice) will never end. |
|
Mc_man....update on all of this....sorry if you thought I was coming in the rascist door...it ain't happening...I grew up poor white trash in Louisisan and wished I could be black so I could live in a brick house provided by the government. And I attended a black university...go Jaguars. And as a war of aggression reenactor, I had to constantly lecture people who thought we were all rascists.
Reading the diaries of soldiers who were in the war quickly changes that opinion. editd cuz por whit trash kant spel |

Just today, I was driving south on I-83 heading into Baltimore, and I noticed a flag on an over pass. When I got closer, I noticed that someone had spray painted it with the message "Resist War". I took the next exit and came back around and removed the vandalized flag, folded it, and was putting it in my truck when one of Baltimore's finest pulled up. I think he thought I was stealing it, but when I showed it to him he thanked me and asked me what I was going to do with it. I let him know that my local VFW will have another one to retire, and he thanked me again. That is the second time in my life I ever had a positive experience with Maryland police. I thanked him as well.
I just wish I would have caught the vandal in the act. |
