I purchased a smith's tri-hone and am trying to sharpen my CRKT M16-12z with it, but I absolutely suck at sharpening knives. Any tips? First off, it appears as though the stones were not glued into the fixture perfectly flat, so that is not helping any. I just can't seem to get it sharp at all, I'm guessing that I am not keeping the angle consistent, but the little plastic angle guide provided is worthless.

Spyderco Triangle kit.

I've tried a lot of sharpener, and this is the only one I've been able to do a GOOD job with.

Get the kit with the extra fine stone & you'll have all your friends asking you to sharpen their knives.

I just got the spyderco triangle sharpmaker for 49 (shipped) off of ebay. Should be here in a week. It's got good reviews and I'm excited to give it a try. I did try one of the galco ones and it sucked. I couldn't get an edge.

Yup--I use the diamond set with the optional extra fine and aluminum stand. Every deer camp I'm in I end up having to sharpen everyone's knife. Ugh!

With a bit of practice, it is easy to bring any knife capable of taking an edge to a razor's sharpness.

I seem to have a decent edge on the main part of the blade, but it is a tanto style and I cannot get the spear point sharp to save my life right now........

Another vote for the Lansky kit. If you sharpen it perfectly, the shave is indistinguishable from a Mach 3.

If you're in a hurry, a grinder works great.

Just kidding.

At work, I had many of the guys bring me their knives to be sharpened and when I'd hand them back (closed or sheathed), I'd tell them that the grinder worked great. Their mouths would drop and they couldn't check the blade fast enough to see how bad I screwed it up.

I also reccomend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. If you follow the included directions to the letter "T" exactly, you should be able to get an ultra-sharp edge, even for guy like me with 4 thumbs.

I have the Lansky. The only thing I don't like about it is that the metal guide rods are only held in by a set screw, so they twist sometimes. It looks like the Gatco system is basically the same thing, but the guide rods are built into the sharpening stones, so it seems that might be better.

I've never used the Gatco though, so I can't say for sure. I just bought my BIL the Spyderco Sharpmaker for Christmas. Hopefully he'll let me use it so I can see how that thing does. I've heard all good things about it.

Eventually I'd like to get an Edge Pro. Those systems look really nice, but they are expensive.

I use the top guide. Shallowest edge with the kit but I can make it hair popping sharp with it. Plus I've found that when using the steeper angles most factory edges won't work & you have to regrind an edge.

I had a Lansky and I wasn't happy with it so I bought a EdgePro.
Holycrap I can finally put a sharp edge on a knife.
-1 on Lansky but +1 on EdgePro

Edgepro looks nice but for that much money it better bring me beer too.
