If so what are your thoughts on the machine after owning it.

Unfortunately the display on my 3 year old MBP is damaged, and I am not really sure I want to spend the $$$ to get it fixed given the age of the computer so am mulling over the idea of just replacing it.  I was really hoping to get 5 years out of this machine like I did with my previous ones, but it is what it is.

Looking at the current 15" offerings, it's hard to get excited about them.  No magsafe, a lack of connectivity (removing USB and SD card slots), needing fucking dongles, the trackbar which seems to be a solution in search of a problem, and such a ridiculously high price point makes me want to proceed with any new Apple laptop purchase with a great deal of caution.

I'm pretty firmly invested in Apple products from a software standpoint, and hardware as well for that matter, so am hesitant to switch to another O.S.  I am also not that thrilled about using windows machines since I deal with windows and all of its issues every day at work.  That said, I've read some positive things about the Surface pro, and the price point on those is a bit easier to swallow.

I switched to a Surface Book.

I want a Macbook Pro, I far prefer OSX, I just can't bring myself to do it anymore.

Razer makes a couple of really nice systems in the same price range.

I got one in November. It is a fully loaded 15".

I like it. The dongles are not as big of a pain as I originally envisioned and I often have 3-4 USB things I connect to it several times a day. I bought an aftermarket MagSafe to USB-c cord from griffin. It works but comes undone a little too easy.

The track bar thing serves no use for me. The only thing I ever use on it is the fingerprint unlock that is pretty neat.

I love the concept of what Apple is doing with USB-C, I hope third parties get on board with it.

One port to rule them all.  File transfers are amazing fast with it.

Dongles are not that bad, you can buy Hoo-too one that has everything on it from amazon, don't buy the over priced Apple ones.

Its a tough pill to swallow.  My needs have also changed...All of my photostuff is done on an iMac now, and thats really the only thing I need computing power for.  A laptop for me these days is just a device to watch netflix on.

I do like how OSX connects all of your devices...you can view browsing history from one device to the next for example, as well as passwords, and than there is the iCloud drive that I can access my various documents on, but I'm not sure thats all worth $2500.00.

Chrome does that too for what it's worth.

I have a mid 2010 MBP 17" MBP that has been going strong, but I'm looking to upgrade now after 6 years.

I'm waiting until later on in 2017 to purchase a new MBP because they will probably be refreshing later with Kirby Lake processors and going up to 32GB RAM.  The current MBP's top out at 16GB RAM for battery life (so the claim).  If you're looking to do photos and whatnot in a portable way, you will probably want to wait for a more powerful MBP refresh.

The touchbar should have much more functionality as time goes by, I would not be so quick to dismiss it.

The current MBP line up, for me, is lackluster because of the 16GB RAM max and soon to be, 1 generation removed processor.

OP, have you considered a 2015-type Macbook Pro, used or refurbished?  Apple sells refurbs on their website.

I've got a 2015 that I rarely use anymore. I'm waiting for the new IMacs.
