Nearly 80 percent of all mobile malware found in 2012 was written for phones running Google’s mobile Android operating system, according to a report from security firm F-Secure.

Yeah, it's an old article, but mobile device security is not something I know much about, and I'd like to know more. So. Discuss.

The number of Android devices FAR exceeds the number of iPhones out there - kind of like Windows vs Mac. They will always write malware for the easiest targets.

It's like 700 million iOS devices vs 1 billion android devices

700 million is still a large target

The reality is that android devices allow easier access to the OS/device. Apple is more controlling, which does limit you, but also protects you

Any specific measures to take, aside from not rooting/jailbreaking, and installing anti-virus software? Recommendations for good anti-virus apps? Right now, I'm using Bitdefender on one device, and Panda on another.

It's simple. Apple's closed system keeps you protected, but does not allow app developers the freedom that android has. Every app in the store has to be approved by apple. With android, developers have virtually no restrictions, but with that brings the ability to be destructive. You are in charge of security on an android device. If you're on android, stick with well known developers and try to not be an early adopter on any app.

I so far immersed in the apple ecosystem that it would cost me a fortune to switch.

Well, there is the case that Apple stuff itself IS a virus.

True for me as well. Apple apps are not always the latest, greatest or the most innovative, but generally speaking they are more secure, work well and don't require to much screwing around with settings. So for now I am iOS for mobile devices and some entertainment.

One thing is Apple is a higher end device and the OS upgrades aren't as fragmented as Android -- most people are on the latest version. There are plenty of Android high end phones as well but there are also lots of basic phones running something like Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich. That has gotten better I think recently.

But yes overall Apple is more locked down and protects users from their own stupidity (installing malware apps) better than Android.

Just my 2 cents.
