I recently had to wipe a Windows XP drive clean and reinstall Windows XP. The problem I ran into was that the Windows XP version has service pack 1 on it and nothing else. This is my kids computer and its pretty old, I'm not spending the money to upgrade it to anything else. I have to have at least SP3 to install my router software to get that computer on the internet.  So I think, I'll just go to Microsoft and download the service packs off of the Microsoft website and save them to a CD or USB drive. So, I get on my Windows 7 machine and go to the site and find what I need. Here comes the Windows 7 question. When I click to download the file, obviously I want to save it and not run it, it tells me to place a disk into "drive F". I dont have a "drive F" I have A, C and D. USB drives show up as G or H. Somewhere the default download save drive has decided to be be a drive I dont have. How can I change the default to let me choose the location to save a file?

you don't need router software to get the computer online, anyway

if it's wireless..just use the built in windows wireless configuration, it works better anyway.

if it's not wireless, plug it in and turn it on.

drivers for your network hardware may be another story entirely

I tried to use the wizard to create a connection, it was showing a connection, but not allowing any data transfer. I had to use the software on both of my other computers to get it to communicate, 1 Vista and 1 Windows 7. Not sure on the XP machine how to get the connection to communicate without the software. Its almost as if the router locks out any device not authorized. Cisco E3000 router.

I am pretty computer literate, built about 10 machines in my life, but networks escape my comprehention for some reason.

This phenom is also found in most postal workers and commercial air transport personnel...

Edit:  something is misconfiguration with that router.  you shouldn't need the foo-foo crap on that cd unless it is for setup and you're a derping tard.

Haha....I'm neither of those. I'm going to try it again, without the wizard. It'll probably link right up.

I do need the service packs though.

Thanks for the replies.

The problem he was most likely having is XP SP1 was missing WPA-2 support.
