Most of my cars have been automatics, but went back to a manual. Currently a 5 speed impreza. I love it, but it is kind of a grind when driving in town.

My DD is an auto, cause they got offer many full size trucks with manuals anymore
Ol ladys DD is a manual, and we both prefer manual transmissions.... |

All I've ever owned is pickups. Two were sticks, I prefer automatics in them. Never killed a transmission yet.
There is nothing "sporty" about shifting a truck manual transmission. Unless shifter throws in the 8" range thrill you. |

My DD's have all been manuals. Chevy 4 speed granny low (SM465) and five speeds. I don't end up in a lot of stop and go traffic, but it doesn't bother me to have a stick in that kind of traffic either. Just used to it I guess. 20 years of driving sticks.

First car I drove was a manual. I've been a truck driver for 30 years so I've rowed more gears than 90% of the "err ma gerd ye caint ba a man if you don't drive a stick" knuckle draggers.
In all the years I've been driving I've only had one automatic fail on me. I'm in the middle of replacing the second clutch in 4 years on my wifes Jeep. A daily driver is for going places and getting things done. Going places and getting rhings done is more easily and inexpensively accomplished with an automatic. I have no desire to fondle a stick while going about my daily life. |
|
if its a daily driver, i like to just get in it and go. So Auto... but if its a performance car or sporty type daily driver, manual.
|
|
Almost every vehicle I've ever owned has had a manual transmission.
The next one will be an auto. I'm tired of it, not for a daily driver. |

I finally bought my first auto in 2013. What a improvement in my daily driver
|

If you are in bumper to bumper traffic on a daily basis I would say auto.

My DD is a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia day-cab, and it has a ten-speed manual transmission. I've driven an auto-transmission semi-truck before, and it absolutely BLOWS in traffic, because the transmission jumps between gears in a very sloppy way. I'm old-school enough that I need more control of the engine speed, and I hate the idea of a truck doing the thinking for me.
My car is a 2009 Honda Fit Sport and it has the 5-speed automatic w/ the flappy-paddle shifters for 'Sport' mode. They suck compared to a real manual transmission, but it's still a fun car to drive. |
|
My DDs are automatic. My antique cars are manual. Autos weren't around when the Model A was built. My Willys MB is manual (Ford GPW engine and transmission).
|
|
Do they make anything besides sports cars with manual transmission? I had almost nothing but manuals up until the late 90s then it seems like I haven't had one since.

Manual. Car Jacker's are notoriously stupid and stick shift activates brain lock in them!

WATT!!! The weenies are winning in the poll! All you manual drivers, GTFI here and vote!!!
It's called "standard shift" for a reason, yanno! |
|
I just bought a 2017 Toyota Yaris Ia , manual 6 speed.
I drive 58 miles round trip daily to work. 42 mpg, not very expensive, and fun to drive. |
|
Too much traffic these days for a manual DD.
My next car will be an auto. |
|
5 vehicles.
4 of them are manuals. 5th one is a 66 Mustang that is going to get restored and may or may not convert to a manual transmission as well. |

The general discussion claims to drive a manual transmission at 6 times the industry rate.

I just sold a 5 speed manual tacoma last week. Traded it on a 4runner with an automatic. My commute changed and two hours a day of sitting and bumping the clutch in and out got old fast.

Found the liberal with the "It's the current year" argument. I have both, auto and a 6 speed. DD the 6 speed because I don't deal with much traffic. If I did I would consider getting an auto. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

I've been driving a manual for 24 years.
My next vehicle will be an auto. Rush hour traffic is no fun, especially since all people know now is slam gas and brake, don't understand moving at a slow constant speed. idiots |
|
|
My old diesel is a 6 speed manual.....I wish it was an Allison.
|
|
I have not owned an automatic since I got divorced 17 years ago.
|
|
My current vehicles are all standard trans.
If you know what you're doing they aren't bad in traffic at all. It does stink that cvt/autos are the "standard" these days |

I'm 52 years old, have had 4 cars in my life, and they've all been manual transmissions.
My battered but ever-faithful 2004 Toyota Matrix with a 5 spd will no longer pass inspection (rust) so I'm now looking at new cars right now, most likely with an auto this time. I feel old and like a chapter of my life is closing , but for various life reasons (elderly mother in an urban area, husband who will need knee surgery, etc) an auto makes sense this time. --Sigh--. I honestly feel like anyone getting a drivers license should be forced to take their road test in a car with a stick unless they have a physical disability. Sure would keep a lot of terrible drivers off the roads. CG PS Anyone have any thoughts on the Mazda CX-5? So far it seems like the best of a bad selection (smallish hatchback/wagony sorts of vehicles). |

All my cars, including my current DD are Manual. Any car I've bought for my wife are Auto's.

I dailyed a manual for a few years. Nope, never again. It became a burden more than fun.

Once upon a time, I was convinced I would never drive anything but 2-door coupes or 4wd pickups with a manual transmission.
Then I grew up (old), and set aside such concerns for comfort and convenience in my high-traffic NoVA commute and am completely fine with my choice to succumb to a four-door sedan and a Steptronic transmission. |

View Quote I've actually always had an automatic transmission on my cars(I'm 34). I was taught to drive a manual though. Had to borrow my brothers truck before buying the jeep to drive a stick again as it had been like 5 years since I had driven one. I usually ride a motorcycle though so I guess I'm more use to shifting so I wanted the manual jeep this time. Doesn't help that my old jeeps automatic transmission is starting to fail. It isn't the first automatic I've had to go out or start to go out although to be fair most have been with high miles on them. |
