I just got back from shopping for my annual "Angel Tree" outing. I usually pick one boy and one girl, but was thinking of just doing one this year...untill I got there and saw the amount of donations needed this year.
I usually overlook the video game's, Bratz dolls...ect and look for the kids who what more"old school" gifts. Here is what I bought. #1 Boy 9 "listed as "special Needs" will have a new BMX Bike and a Skateboard he wanted #2 Boy 13 wanted a book and board games. Got the book, Risk, Scrable and Chess set #3 Girl 9 wanted arts and crafts stuff. An asortment of painting and other craft stuff. #4 Girl 9 Wanted Bike and a diary. They will be under her tree. If your at a mall this weekend shopping, pick one up and do a good thing for a kid for christmas. |

Some of the angel trees also have tags for the elderly. These are usually folks in nursing homes who don't have family or little family involvement.
I was at the post office the other day and picked up a couple of elderly tags. The wish lists included what the recipients need and want. Needs were usually socks, underwear, radio, batteries for radio, tshirts, undershirts, toiletries, etc. Wants included a sweatsuit, slippers, a blanket or throw, etc. It makes me sad to realize that what we take for granted every day are luxuries for many. |

other than my immediate family, i told me wife this week that we arent buying anything for any other family member other than my grandmothers and my 2 y/o niece.
we took our first family photo and are give framed prints to everyone else with a note thanking god for the graciousness he has given our family. That we have given gifts to Toy for Tots and the Angel Tree instead. Last night my wife and I went to Toy R US to buy it all. We donated just shy of $600 worth of toys for Toys for Tots last night. My wife and 8 y/o son are going to visit the Angel Tree tomorrow to pick out their needs. I plan of $400 for them. We are just a middle class family, but my family has everything they need. when I cant think of anything you need of off the top of my head, the reality of it is- there is someone else out there who does need something. We have always given to T4T and AT but never like this. I've up'd my contribution to the John 3:16 mission and the Salvation Army this year too. imagine if 80% of the total registered members of ArfCom bought just 2 toys- 1 for a boy and 1 for a girl. we did the nursing home gig last week thru my sons school. i went to Sams and got a ton of stuff. |
