Backcountry navigation has a free demo, so I downloaded it to see if its any good.
I'll update this thread later today after I've played around with it.

I download USGS maps for free to use with it. I think I paid $7 for an overlay of state/fed/private property lines for AZ. |

It covers the entire states so far as I can tell.
USGS maps are generally not very new. I use them because I like having contour lines. If I need a newer map then I can change the source or go with satellite photos.

I paid for navionics lakes. And last love it! Topo lake maps use it for fishing in my little boat as well as ice fishing

I played around with the Backcountry navigator free trial for a bit tonight. It is a very easy to use interface, and I like being able to switch between topo and sat photo views. I also like being able to look at the maps without using the GPS, which saves batter power. Unless I can find something about it that I don't like before the trial is over, I will be buying this software.
