I was thinking about picking some up to add to tannerite (as stated on their website).  Does anyone know where I can buy some?  Thanks.

....may I suggest the Alcan 5621 atomized, 2 micron APS.  [BD]

If you really are making Thermite, which is perfectly legal, please use a mesh size considerably larger than 2 microns.  Iron oxide's reaction with aluminum that size is very violent.  The goal is to have the molten iron stay in one spot rather than get splashed around.

I've had luck with these guys as well as Fire-Fox posted above.

Keep in mind that without an ATF explosive license, you are limited to 1 pound per purchase and 2 pounds per year.

You'll find the 1 pound to be more than enough.

With tannerite, I recommend a really fine flake.

I think Tannerite, the stuff you shoot to detonate, already contains aluminium powder.  It's basically flash powder.

Tanner recommends adding aluminum powder to their Nitrosticks, which is just ammonium nitrate sensitized with nitromethane.  You detonate that stuff with a blasting cap.  Adding aluminium powder propagates the burning so the Nitrosticks explode at a higher velocity.

* By adding other sensitizing agents to the nitrogen, you can increase the MPS (Meters Per Second) dramatically. One such additive is finely derived aluminum particles. Approximately 4% will enhance the pergfomance of the explosive. This mixture is commonly known as "ammonal". A correct measuremnt by volume is provided if requested with your order.

of course if making thermite it wont ignite by a match alone

you need something like a magnesium ribbon

Informational use only of course.

I have a few ribbons that I "borrowed" from the Chemistry Lab at my school.

You can make rust quickly by placing nails or steel wool in a glass container and then mixing a 1:1 ratio of Chlorox and Vinegar.

Oh, and Aluminum Powder can be had from paint stores without the odd looks.

It is used to give paint a "metallic" shine.

Aluma stop leak.

German dark is delicious when sprinkled over vanilla ice cream.

Peace be with you.

Aluminum usually doesn't come off in nice powder; it's too soft.  You usually end up with larger chips or ribbons.

I've usually seen it pre-mixed with turpentine (?) in a paste.  The paste will evaporate for the most part if you warm it in an oven.

Pyrotechnic aluminium is a fine flake product, often called "German Dark" because the powder takes a dark gray color.  I'm sure small-sized paint aluminum would work, but the pyrotechnic fine grades are ideal.

Just stop by a junk yard, get something chunky made out of aluminum, and a good file.
Or, drop by a chemical supply store, for something a little finer and more percise (and save ALOT of filing).

You can by thermite, aluminium powder, and other interesting stuff (like heavy water) from this site

Thermite is legal to own. I know guys who cut steel with it. It's a bitch to light though.

Hi-Vel used to sell magnesium ribbon and thermite. I don't know if they still do...

At one time I was going to see about adding a few flakes of powdered magnesium to a shotgun round to see if I could duplicate Dragons Breath. I heard it is much more involved than that so I gave up on the idea. I don't mess with mixing stuff..I like my hands and too much.. In addition to that, I know NOTHING about any type of mixes..Hell, I can't even follow a recipe for BBQ chicken! [;)]

if one wanted to put thermite in a putty form, what would they add to the AlFe mixture?

A word to the wise, if you are dealing with very fine aluminium powder, ground yourself from Static electricity!!!!  No need to be a Darwin Candidate!
