Our downstairs AC unit has been weak and getting worse for about a week now, got to the point over the weekend where it wouldn't cool at all. Nothing was frozen up, filters were good, plenty of airflow through the air handling unit. This is a 4 ton unit. Wife calls the service guy this morning, they come out in the afternoon. Pump $200 worth of freon into it and discover there's a leak in the condenser that can't be repaired, so a whole new air handler is needed. They'll get back to us tomorrow with the details for that. This equipment is about 15-17 years old. My question is - when you arrive and find a unit with no refrigerant, isn't there some way of checking for leaks that doesn't require pumping $200 worth of freon into it? I mean, you have to assume there's a leak other wise the unit wouldn't have been dry............. it's not as if it was low, it didn't have any from what I could tell after the fact when I got home. |
