Would I be able to take a barrel that isn't rifled and is just plane and tap it so I could put choke tubes in it? The barrel is a 18.5 inch. The gun is a Mossberg 500.

The risk of being off is too great. This is not a do it yourself job. I reccomend Mike Orlen. His prices are reasonable and he's a well respected smith. Very fast turnaround too. Days, not weeks.

That is a job for a gunsmith experienced in installing chokes. Seminole Gun Works or Briley come to mind.

You need special reamer, tap and experience to do it correctly.. Send it to a smith..

You got $600 burning a hole in your pocket? Also do you have a lathe to make sure that your square to the bore? Oh and another $150 in adjustable reamers.. Or send it to a smith and pay the $65 or so dollars to have one installed properly!

My thoughts too. Why not just get another barrel for the Mossy?

You can get a 20" barrel with removable chokes from Mosseberg for $148.

I would reccomend mike Orlen in Amherst Mass. He is a moderator of the gunsmithing forum on shotgunworld.com and came highly recommended. I sent him my gun for stock bending last wednesday, it arrived at his shop friday, it arrived back at my office today. Register at shotgun world and he will charge you wholesale. Also a great guy.
