I want to add a floor outlet to the foyer for a lamp. I have a light switch that turns on a bath room vent that's located under the foyer. Three feet away there's also 2 light switches that turn on the second floor foyer lights and lighting for the stairs. There are actually 2 sets of switches for the foyer lights and stairs.
I think it may be easier to get a line from the wall mounted switches but since these are the second set of switches can I draw power from them for the outlet? Getting a line from the bath room light switch to the floor outlet may be a little more difficult with the studs that are in the way but I've done this in the past but that was a very simple straight line type of installation. Anyway what do I look for on the double switches to know if I can connect from here to the outlet? |

depends on how the switch is run. If there is one set of wires only (a black, white and ground) (hopefully with the white taped or colored to black) on each switch, there is no neutral for you to use and you cannot. |

yes if there are two switch's that control the same lights it is a 3 way switch. If it is a 3 way switch and there is only one set of wires coming into the box it is complicated and the answer is Maybe.
3 way switch can be wired in multiple ways. some diagrams switch switch light (not what you have it sounds like light-switch-switch (could be what you have) if you have this a switched outlet could be added variation on previous (could be what you have) If you have the right side switch in this one an outlet could be added. if you have the left side switch in the layout a switched outlet could be added |
