What do you want to know?  I was in a unit with a lot of SMPs and I almost SMPed myself before I realized how much fun deployments were.  There was a thread recently about SMPs... I'll see if I can find it.

I don't know how to hot link... sorry, hopefully that'll help.

Deployments are fun? Please elaborate. Also in your unit what did the SMP people have to do, were they tested more or generall like everyone else?

Does one have to attend basic/ait before being SMP? Can one do SMP during ms1? Can one get four year rotc scholarship and smp pay?

You do have to enlist as an SMP. However, many go the SMP route and go to OSUT over the summer and then come back to their unit. If you are a contracted SMP cadet you cannot receive a full ride. You can do the SMP program as an MS1.  I am a GRFD contract cadet. I did not go to basic/AIT but I drill with a unit in a CDT status. I am supposed to "shadow" a LT around and see how it works. I am paid at an E-5 pay grade. However, my drilling time does not count towards time in service. Also, with the GRFD you are guaranteed your branch but you are obligated to serve in the National Guard. I will be commissioning in May as a MP LT.... You can do the SMP program as an MS1.

Before my first deployment, we had so many cadets they had a cadet Plt, that was more than slightly absurd.  They pretty much didn't do anything, and since the rest of the unit was ramping up to go overseas they got away with it.  When I got home I only went to maybe 3 drills before I left again, and the number of cadets had slimmed down some, and each officer had 2 cadets following them around, and the cadets did things like risk assessments and other stuff of that nature.  They also did whatever training the rest of the company had laid on.

Of course deployments are fun, its like a mandatory fun day, you gotta go so you might as well make the best of it.

So one can contract in the ROTC but won't receive any ta from SMP? I was under the impression persons could use ROTC for r&b, and smp for TA? How does that work is federal is 100% and state is 100% ta, can one use part for ug, and then the other for graduate study? From what I gather one can't get out of GRFD, is this true? I was also under the impression that SMP counted for retirement/service time, not true? So could one do smp for 2 years of under graduate and 2 years of graduate work? Basically one can be in the program the entire time they are rotc? From your post one doesn't have to attend basic/ait but they can if they wish, any benefits to that?

Basically stalking someone all day, and doing the grunt work while they were paid e-5. Is there any way to check which units are getting deployed? I know my state is going to wot IN 2009, but I don't know when they are deploying. If a unit is deployed how would one train, find one that isn't deployed, or stay behind with maintance personnel and get paid? How are units selected for deployment, randomly? Cause it would suck to have a unit selected many times in a row. If one goes active, ie deployed in the guard, does that mean that every 3-4 days is considered a drill period, and counts for retirement, or how exactly does that work, more money in retirement, early retirement?
