Outstanding!!! And spot on. Unless Americans feel that THEY are in the war, it will just be some kid overseas. ETA: And this isn't just a USMC thing. I've heard it from every other service out there. www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/opinion/letters/send/s_490808.html www.journalstar.com/articles/2007/01/23/opinion/letters/doc45b5634ed1a37693612098.txt |
I think the the note is an over-generalization. And I do give a crap about what's going on overseas. I do agree that much of America has their head in the sand, although IMO talk radio (such as Glen Beck)is doing a good job of waking the sheep up. |
| Exactly right. People could give a shit less what is happening overseas so long as it doesnt effect them here at home. Sometimes I think it would be better if the War on Terror was happening right here in the US. Then again, I love my kids and am happy that our brave troops are handling this mess in the asshole of the world. |
maybe media coverage, its not really a suprise though isn't about 70% of the country against the war? |
I don't know. Some buddies and I were discussing that exact thing today. In WWII every able bodied American male was in the military, all the industries converted to making war materials, every citizen rationed critical items. We spent 1/3 of our GDP on weapon production. Now we have a 1.4 million person military, one in every 300 or so people. We spent what, 3% of the GDP on defense? And people on this board (and especially the ADD assholes in the media) have the gall to claim we are "losing" the war, and because we are not "taking the gloves off" or haven't sent enough troops (we don't have any more to send, without further breaking a broken Army). I hope we never fight another war with such lack of conviction. The way the pusillanimous American public is now, even a Balkans style conflict would have them screaming to "bring the troops home" in a matter of months. What a nation of entitlement mentality impatient noncommittal little sheeple we have become. |
Because we don't feel threatened enough. In 1941,we were a huge country, with a tiny pathetic army, and a good sized navy that had just been devastated. We were surrounded by military empires busy conquering the rest of the civilized world. Now,we face crackpot Islamic crazies who barely even have enough military power to take over whole nations on their home turf & who can barely face us in guerrila warfare, much less a stand up battle. They hold the promise of eventually being able to wield the most dangerous weapons in the world, but they have not yet proven their ability to both develop those weapons, and use them against us effectively. Until they make good on their threat on American soil,Americans will continue to ignore the war. We Americans don't learn lessons the easy way |
First, I don't buy the 70 percent figure. That figure is also media driven. If true, then that 70 percent either has very short term memory or is just fucking stupid for listening to the media. The media and the left are doing the same shit they did 30 something years ago. God, it gets old hearing the same shit I heard back then. |
I have no personal connection (unless you count knowing what it is like to serve your country while the left and the media do everything they can to help the enemy) and I damn well give a lot more than a crap |
That is a personal connection in just about everybody's eyes. |
Short memory indeed, America forgot about 9/11 |
I suspect that some of that 70% feel we should take the gloves off. They feel it's going bad and we should do something different. But they don't want to run up the white flag. |
1. threat(militant islam) < threat(nazi-germany+imperial japan) 2. threat(militant islam + atomic bombs) < threat( nazi-germany+imperial japan) 3. militant islam w/ atomic weapons will not/cannot defeat the united states i believe all 3 are true. i suspect conciously or subconciously most americans feel the same way. based on this, how do you motivate the populace to support a long term war in the middle east? to achieve the desired national motivation, you must convince a majority of americans that theorem number 3 is false... and that fighting a war on the scale of wwII is desirable..... someone should start a pole on that question... should the president propose and congress declare war on (a list of countries i guess) militant islam whereever it exists. this would be a world war obviously of some sort... |
If that is true, they sure as hell don't point out the difference in the media. That would not look good, now would it? |
70% of the us does not support or would not support hama rules, at least if it was explained to them... not now. mayhap at the ontset, in 2002.... not now.. |
