Average pocket knife, 2-5 inchs in length, folding or non. I realise a knife could be used as a weapon, as could a hammer. In general I have always views knives as a tool, not a weapon and can't understand how people get so pissy about them. To me a knife=tool, guns=weapon.

Where do you stand?

Both..

Primarily a tool, but if the situation and need dictates, absolutely a weapon

Tool.

I feel lost without my Swiss Army knife in my pocket.

A tool that can make a handy weapon in a pinch.

I would say both. If you use it to open a box, cut down a tree limb etc, it is a tool. If you stab someone with intent to do bodily harm then it is a weapon.

Many things can be weapons if needed.

Stereotypes against knifes are like those against guns.

A tool is a tool. Sometimes the tool you have isn't perfect for the job.
But it's better than no tool at all!

Doesn't make it untrue.  Power tripping mall ninjas & Affirmitive Action hire real JBTs (we be da po-leese!!!) are a reality.

AFAIC if it's under whatever length limit re knives in whatever state weapons statute then it's not a weapon unless you are using it as such.

pocket knife - tool first, defensive weapon in desperate circumstances

screw driver - tool first, defensive weapon in desperate circumstances

clawhammer - tool first, defensive weapon in desperate circumstances

etc, etc, etc.

Its not the inanimate object that is inherently dangerous, but the way we choose to use it.

My thoughts also.  The typical pocket knife is certainly not ideal for self defense, but is better than nothing.

It's a tool.

Anything can be used as a weapon but a pocket knife isn't the first thing I would grab if I needed something to defend myself. In fact, I'd rather have a claw hammer than a tiny knife.

And some think the sound of a 12 gage pump strikes fear in the bad guys, I've got a fleshlight!

on the other hand, if a pump makes them soil themselves, I don't think I want to know what a fleshligt might make them do

Only women fancy a pocket knife to be a weapon.  Men who believe that pocket knives are weapons are pussies or ignorant queer bates.  Real men know that pocket knives were designed as tools, but can be used as weapon.  A claw hammer was designed as a tool to drive and pull nails, but it has the potential to be a devastating weapon under the wrong circumstances.   In a street fight or bar brawl I can think of a dozen other things that I would prefer to have in my hands other than a pocket knife.  However, left with the choice of nothing or a pocket knife I'd take the pocket knife.

Knives are tools.

ANY tool can be made into a weapon.

The magical component that accomplishes this task, looks sorta like this:

If you think knives and other specialized tools designed to be efficient weapons are the only thing that are weapons, you are not using your magical component.
