i have an enflamed sciatic nerve(sciatica, i believe they call it) and it hurts like a bastard.  for those of you who may be unfamiliar with the malady, imagine having a fairly serious case of carpal tunnel syndrome--only in your ass and radiating down your leg.  yeah..ouch.  so anyway, i know that surgery is typically a last resort these days and i know that non -surgical therapies exist, i just don't know what they are.  if you've had it, or treated it..what works?  would subjecting myself to the voodoo that is chiropractic alleviate the situation, or is there a simpler alternative?  i've had this thing for about 2 weeks and it has become most unpleasant.  help?

I've heard of people getting some relief from chiros, and also from acupuncture.

If you stop dating men, I can vouch that those symptoms will stop.

Foot massage, Sounds stupid but the center of your feet being masaged gives relief,  Dont sit leaning forward, Advil 3 at a time if your stomach can deal with it. I never had an operation but it went away, someone gave me that advise, dont know if it went away from it but it stopped after doing all of those.

1) Avoid pressure to the area!!!
2) Remove your wallet
3) ICE to the affected buttock area
4) NSAIDS
5) Steroids--I have had very good results with prednisone for this.

Of course this is assuming you have no other problems, that your diagnosis is correct and that you have no contraindications to any of the meds.

SEE A DOC!

There is always a chance that you have something going on in your spine or elsewhere that would be more concerning.

Excercise for back muscles, streching and NSAIDS. Yoga sounds gay but it really helps.
Next step is steroid shots in same back muscles.
Last resort is surgery. I had emergency back surgery because I blew a disc L4/L5 and it caused my leg to go limp.

thanks for the info, guys.

here's more info...

i'm 40.  to paint a picture of my general condition i would tell you that i played college football and have continued to work out religiously since that time.  i'm strong as an ox and have never had any illness or malady of any description other than cold or flu. BUT, i think i have pinpointed the start of this situation to carrying full sheets of 1/2 drywall up two flights of stairs.  not heavy, but very awkward--i may have twisted in a strange way and goobered myself up.  i would doubt that it is anything like a degenerative disc disease, or herniated disc etc (but i could be wrong).

could it be pinched?

Notorious, I can and will vouch for the effectiveness of chiropractic. I had a pinched nerve in my neck/shoulder area, in the back (Trapezius?) It felt about like a severly sore neck; at one point I couldn't raise my right hand above my navel.
I went to GPs and specialists for 8 months, then tried a chiropractor. I got far more relief out of one 30 minute visit to the chiro than the GPs or specialists did in 8 months!!
I had to maintain a schedule for about 2 months before the pain went away, but it DID go away! And it went away without drugs!

As an added benefit, I stopped getting migraine* headaches, too!

Try it! And good luck!

*Migraine is a medical term describing a 400 pound woman wearing spike heels... standing on your eyeballs.
