Does anybody else here use an ATM to deposit checks, etc. into their checking account, etc.  I usually do but I was just thinking the other day, how safe is this?

I mean lets say you deposit a check into an ATM, but it never gets to your bank.  What proof do you have that you actually deposited that check.  Sure you get a receipt from the ATM but is that really legit proof since the amount on the receipt is simply the number YOU typed in.

You don't get a reciept. You get a record. That's why it is not "legit proof".

However, the ATM safes are opened by two person teams. Anyway, checks are relatively safe. Cash on the other hand...

the receipt is meaningless, since you could have put nothing in the envelope

however...........

checks are very traceable - hence you have proof if need be

I consider ATM's a very reliable means to deposit checks, but I would NEVER deposit cash into them.

I stopped using ATM's in the mid 80's. I just didn't like the idea that I was being charged money to access my OWN money. I much prefer using my  current credit union, where  they know me by name and I can call them on the phone and handle almost any problem. I carry enough cash to get through my days , usually without a hassle.

Yeah I agree I won't use an ATM that is going to charge me a fee unless I have absolutely no other choice.

Ok so checks are safe but cash is not.  That is what I was thinking as well.  With cash there is no way to trace it.  Checks on the other hand are another story.

Checks are only as safe as the routing number of the bottom of the check, which is to say not safe at all; a person with the proper know-how can use that routing number and wreck havoc on an account.

A long time ago (4 years) I used to service ATM's. We would pick up deposits out of the atm's on a daily basis. At the time we serviced 2 banks BOA and B1. BOA policy was to credit the account one time if the deposit was not received, after that tough luck.

You would be amazed as to what people would deposit into atms. At one bank one a gentleman had deposited 10k in cash, it jammed the machine and was half in the machine and half out. Another time we pulled 2 deposits out of the machine, 1 for 70k, the other for 30k.

I am here to tell you atm's are not perfect. If you are depositing a couple 100 extra go for it. If it your paycheck or something of more importance, drop it in the night deposit or go inside. There have been times when deposits have jammed so bad that we had to destory them to get them cleared, the bank always loved that.

Atm's are convienent to get money. To put the money in your account use the drive up or go inside, better yet for paychecks get direct deposit.

Locally, theives have been installing card readers and pinhole cams on existing ATM machines.

When you use the ATM they get your PIN on video and copy your card. Then go on a spending spree.
