My son is considering enlisting in the ANG to help with college.  No problem with the academic stuff or motivation but he has my lousy athletic genes.

What are the physical requirements for enlistment?  What is the PT like?  Where is basic conducted?  How should he prepare?

Thanks in advance!

In for Guard hate.

Seriously though. It's the best decision for a young guy with no direction without committing to active duty.

Everyone in the AF goes to Lackland AFB in San Antonio for basic.

Physically, basic is a joke. I was pretty disappointed actually. If anything he should start running and have some upper body strength. Doesn't have to be in super shape.

The ANG basic will be held in the same manner as the active duty AF at Lackland AFB.  PT is standard stuff.  They run, do push-ups and sit-ups.  Just have him in generally good shape before the leaves and he will fine.

ANG goes to AF Basic, right alongside active duty AF and AF Reserve recruits.  Google the requirements for AF Basic Training and you'll have your answer.  From my experience, I advise that he start running and doing push-ups.  Those two were the most strenuous parts of for most non-athletes when I was going through Basic.  Everything else they did was grade school level phys ed stuff.

Our unit at least has the student flight folks get together every drill to do some PT and other stuff to get them ready for basic.  All I did to get ready was pack a suitcase.

Thanks all!  He's a couple years away so he has time.

Now, to shop for a unit near a school he gets into.

I would make sure its about more than college money, the military can be miserable if you do it for the wrong reasons...it can be miserable for the right reasons too.  If he is serious about doing ANG than he should start doing pushups/situps/running now, the initial entry training experience is directly related to how in/out-of-shape you are when you show up.

Like said ....Start running ,doing sit ups and push ups...But don't hurt yourself

AF Basic isn't hard but is even easier if you show up in shape. The PT thing ( even in the ANG ) is a much bigger deal today, long gone are the AF days of jumping on a scale and scratching out a 1.5 run and than getting wasted at the Sqdn picnic after words and having sore legs for a week or two !

I went through way back in 1988 and going out and running before going basic was a big help as the first thing the drill instructor did was have our flight do a run and he picked out the four fastest guys to be the four man formation run lead team for the rest of basic. All those who were unprepared to run had a hard time and were given a hard time.
