I am a long time AMEX card holder and liked the fact that I had to pay it off every month as I don't like carrying a lot of debt.

I'm about to tell them to kiss off as AMEX has signed me up for several "clubs" and magazine subscriptions without my active participation. I called customer service to ask how they think they can get away with this fraud and all CS would say was it is a Marketing promotion.

Isn't this practice illegal? Is there anything I can do short of cancellng my card to stop this practice?

First - tell them you want to "opt out" of any marketing sign-ups thy do.  They will remove you from them.

Second - you don't have to pay for anything you didn't sign up for.

I've had a credit card with them for over 35 years, and I've never had that happen.  Strange.z

6/10  I don't really sense your anger.  If you had included some F-bombs or "skull-fucking" comments I'd bump it up to an 7 or 8.

+1  call them and tell to remove you from all marketing campaigns.

I realize I'm not obligated to pay, but I also do not want to have to call them every month to dispute the charges. They told me last month it would be taken care of...

I wish you would have heard my telephone conversation with them

Call - ask to speak to a supervisor and tell them that you are asserting your rights under the FTC guidelines to be removed from all marketing initiatives.

I have an AMEX for work, it is business service though and I have had great GREAT service from them all over the world.

Member since 84. Never had a problem and certainly nothing like this from them. They sent me one of those portfolios way back in the day and I called them and they immediately canceled the charges.

I too have been a member for a long time. I turned in a flight reward for 100,000 miles last summer. I have used AMEX literally all over the world (China to Europe to Medellin Columbia). I have never had an issue with them. That's why my post has been fairly tame.
