What's the thinking on these chips?

Has AMD caught up or surpassed Intel as far as quality?

Is one really better than the other or about the same?

AMD quality is as good as Itel's
Right now the latest and greatest chip is Itel's core 2 duo.
I prefer AMD but that's just me. mmk

I've only used AMD in my builds.. no particular reason other than AMD is what I've used for years..

I don't see anything wrong with Intel.. Maybe I'll use Intel in my next build...

Check with Zhukov.  He is a chip designer for AMD.  He has the inside scoop.

I believe it depends on your application. I do a great deal of image processing and am quite pleased with my Athlon X2 3800+ box.

i've used AMD, i've used intel.

the intel machines are ALOT quieter

all i sell @ work are AMD processors.   they seem to run as long as the cpu fans spins @ the proper speed &  as long as the fan doesn't fall of the processor.   i've had a couple cooler master fans fall off the heatsink and fry the amd cpu with in a couple mintutes

Why in the world would Intel be quieter... That is something I have not seen. AMD CPUs run cooler than comparable Intel chips and have for 3 years and so on machines with variable speed fans should be quieter.

BangStick1 AMDs quality is as good as Intel’s now and AMD had the fastest chips up until a few months ago… but the Intel Core 2 Duo is the speed king right now. If you are building a high end machine for gaming or graphics/video the  Intel Core 2 Duo is the way to go if you just want a good all around utility machine the AMD Athlon 64 is the ticket.

i always joke about it @ work.   "that must be a amd machine its so loud"    95% of the time i will be right.     most of the XP and MP processors can't spin below 3500rpm  before you start seeing problems.   more often on the MP's and the xp's.

now my current amd 64 3k+ socket 754 spins @ about 3500.   but it has alot bigger heatsink and fan than the xp's do.   its still pretty loud though

my p4 HT 2.4 ghz "junk" linux box 5 feet from me has always been quieter.    when i reboot sometime this week i'll get a rpm for ya.

my dad had a amd 1800+XP  that he uses for his main autocad computer.    the next year i built him a p4 2.6.     he complains that the amd system is so much louder.  I have switched out the cpu fan a couple times, it doesn't make a difference.   if you put your finger on the cpu fan.   the noise disapears..    i use retail box processors BTW.

That would be true for processors in the 2.4GHZ range AMD XPs or MPs in that performance range would be hotter but not for newer CPUs.

Yes the XP were very hot and easy to fry… but the Althon XPs and MPs are 3+ years old and I do not believe have been in production for quite awhile.

The Althon 64 is another animal all together and there is no question that Althon 64 CPUs run much cooler that comparable Intel CPUs and they don’t burn out quickly anymore if the fan fails they have thermal protection.

A Althon 64 3000+ runs much cooler than a P4 at 3Ghz and the Althon 64 3000+ is faster for most tasks. The same is true on up the line.

AMD processors tend to heat up more then Intel.  Use more juice to operate

Difference between the two? One company spends a LOT of money on advertising and marketing. People don't hear AMD on tv every day so they assume it must be inferior.

No... not been true for 3 years.

Now AMD CPUs run cooler that Intel.

Are you saying that an AMD Athlon 64 runs cooler than an Intel Core 2 Duo?

I'm not disbelieving you, I just haven't heard that before.

FWIW, I've built two systems for myself in the past six years.  The first was a PIII 1gHz machine, and the other was a 1.8 ghz AMD.  I've always gone with AMD for speed, but now the Core 2 Duo is my processor of choice and very likely the processor of the machine I'll build early next year.

Yes… qualified

The Core 2 Duo are hotter than MOST AMD Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2…. But the Core 2 Duo are a little cooler than the highest end AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 or Athlon 64 FX-62.

The Core 2 Duo kinda changes things because it runs cooler than Intel’s older dual core chips.

Althon XPs and MPs were very hot chips and when they were AMD main CPU 3+ years ago it was true that AMD CPUs ran hotter than comparable Intel CPUs. But when the Althon 64 line was released the table turned and Intel CPUs were the hotter running chips. And it stayed that way until the Core 2 Duo was released a couple of months ago and now at the very high end it is a little cooler.

As far as speed right now the Core 2 Duo is the winner hands down, it will be in my next personal build.

Normally I would take an AMD but the Intel Core 2 Duos are what I'd probably buy if I built a computer today.
