Just thought I’d share some pics from today’s air show in Broomfield, Colorado. Lot’s of neat aircraft on display with fly bys of a C130, MIG17 and a B17 as well as others. I was kind of disappointed with the B17. I was hoping it would land so I could get some pics but it never did! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One very interesting thing that took place was the appearance of retired Col. William (Bill) Bower, one of the last remaining B25 pilots from the Jimmy Doolittle raid on Japan! Then Lt. Bower was the pilot of the 12th B25 to leave the flight deck for Japan. I had the opportunity to shake his hand and thank him for his service, boy what an honor! ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is a site listing the crews from Doolittle’s Tokyo Raiders. www.homeofheroes.com/wings/part2/01_doolittle_raiders.html ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another highlight of the show was of course the M4 carbine carried by the AF Security Police guarding the Texas Air National Guard F16 fighters. The Sgt. Didn’t seem to impressed when I told him about my AR’s and my M4gery’s but he didn’t mind me taking a picture of his M4, just for you guys of course! ![]() Hope you enjoy the pics! |

Great pics!!!!!! As to the sgt's lack of enthusiasm about your firearms, remember, the guy is a zoomie and you are discussing ground pounder weapons. He probably has an attitude about any man-pac fire arm. Or, he just looks at it as a tool and not something that is ensuring his freedom on the home front. I know a lot of people that don't understand that we too are here to defend even though we don't wear the uniform or wear it any more. Any more in my case. But, I still respect the private gun owner because I know the reason for the RKBA |
Oh, I completely understand his lack of enthusiasm, I’m prior service Army my self and have done my share of static display’s at shows. And the VERY last thing that I ever wanted to do then was go to the arms room to sign out my weapon! All the people crawling around on your aircraft and on top of it your carrying around an empty rifle to boot! It’s just humorous the looks he gave me as I blabbered about rifles!

The MC told us it was a Chinese MIG. |
Nice pics! ![]() Especially interesting is the Mig-17UTI (or Shenyang equivalent). I guess the Navion would be the better choice, from a practical standpoint. Still, it looks pretty good in military markings. Meeting Col. Bower is something you'll never forget. What an honor, indeed! I noticed that the USAF M4 is in pretty good shape, in fact, it's nearly perfect. You didn't happen to mention the "weathering treatment" performed on a privately-owned version by one of his superiors, did you? Thanks for sharing. |
I believe this is a |

Found more info on the Mig.................. The Chinese-built version is known as the Shenyang J-5 (for local use) or F-5 (for export - not to be confused with the F-5 Freedom Fighter). According to some sources, earlier MiG-17s, delivered from the USSR, were designated J-4. From 1964, the Chinese produced variant with a radar, similar to the MiG-17PF, known as the J-5A (F-5A). The Chinese developed also two-seater trainer variant JJ-5 (FT-5 for export), merging J-5 with cabin of the JJ-2 (licence-built MiG-15UTI). It was produced in 1966-1986, being the last produced MiG-17 variant and its only twin-seater variant. The Soviets did not produce a two-seat MiG-17, as they felt that the training variant of the older MiG-15 was sufficient. |
Today there was also an airshow sponsored by the City of Los Angeles, at the Van Nuys Airport(about 20 miles north of L.A.). I was at that show a few years about, and the US Army was there with their exhibit, and they had a M16 there that practically had all of the black anodized finish worn off, so that it was almost silver. I think Uncle Sam got it's money's out of that rifle. |
| I grew up going to the Quad City Air Show (Davenport, IA) every year, havent seen a air show for over 7 years. You would think with the amount of people and military that Hawaii would have air shows, but I dont think there is enough interest for anybody like blue angels, thunderbirds, or golden knights to come out here and perform. I remember watching all three from the roof of my house every year. |
Actually I’m leaning more towards polished chrome my self. I worked General Aviation for a few years and have polished a few spinners my self. Most spinners were chrome plated aluminum, and if they started cracking at the screw holes often times the chrome would start flaking off. |
THanks.. the second to last pic tells me who it is.. VMA-311.. A Yuma bird... |
It's been blended.... nicks can be blended if they are withing a certain size, and depending on which stage the blade is. |
I think its the resolution of the picture. It looks to have a dinged up edge but Im sure its just the picture. |
Chrome plated propeller? ![]() Not on a warbird. That's a polished aluminum propeller. Same goes for the spinners. |
No, it was damaged and blended out as mentioned earlier. |
I'm sorry but that spinner is chrome plated. The props are of course aluminum. |
