Assault rifles among 70 guns stolen from shop

12:05 PM CST on Tuesday, October 31, 2006

By SCOTT GOLDSTEIN / The Dallas Morning News

Two masked men made off with more than 70 guns, including assault rifles, in an early morning burglary at a Hill County gun shop Monday, officials said.

Whitney, Tex. Vic Mohon, owner of Trader Vic’s Gun Shop on FM 1713 near Lake Whitney, discovered the crime while walking his dog near his store later Monday morning. The assailants cut through a metal gate, shattered a glass door and quickly gathered the weapons in about two minutes. The stolen guns were valued at about $40,000, said Mr. Mohon.

“It was cased very well,” said Mr. Mohon.

The Hill County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday morning they had no suspects, but they are looking for a stolen black Dodge extended cab pickup they believe was used in the crime. Video surveillance showed one man wearing a ski mask and the other wearing a Halloween “Scream” mask, officials said.

“Right now, it’s just a lot of unanswered questions,” said Captain Ronnie Myers.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents are also investigating, Captain Myers said.

The store, which opened in 1985 about 70 miles southwest of Dallas, had never been burglarized or robbed before, said Mr. Mohon.

Trader Vic's...

Haven't I heard he has a legendary bad reputation?

He needs to post models and serial numbers. The gunshow is this weekend in San Antonio and I could be on the lookout.

Well that sucks.

In the 6 months that I worked at a gun store we were broken into 3 times, and they're the biggest police supply store in the area

I wrote the reporter a note telling him that calling semi-auto rifles assault weapons was an inaccurate as calling a gelding a stud.

In reflection, he probably doesn't know the difference between a gelding and a stud.
