- Single thread speed is the priority
- Storage can be tiny - must be a rack server What would you build? I tried getting help from Dell on recommendations but they were worthless. |

An AWS compute instance. Also, been burned by outages at Sendgrid, authorize.net, google, godaddy, apple and others. The most reliable company we use has been our data center and our servers have had only one instance of unplanned down time in the last five years. So no, not a fan of "the cloud." |

I would call my local dell and hp server place that has great deals on dell and hp factory refurbished systems. 50% of new for current generation hardware. Let me know if you want my account rep phone number. |

Single threading, low disk requirements, and must be 1U?
That really doesn't say much. You could get the cheapest 1U you can find, install Linux, compile MariaDB or PostgreSQL and fulfill the above. Buying a dedicated 1U rack unit just for a single node *sql server seems like an unnecessary addition of overhead in terms of hardware support and electricity. Do you have a VM environment? Why not just spin up an instance in that? Otherwise, I'd be more inclined to just spin something up in AWS. Even if you were storing PII, HIPAA, or other sensitive data, AWS can provide a BAA to meet your compliancy needs. |

He should just buy a NUC and stash it in the bottom of the rack.

I'd go here:
Dell Outlet ... pick up something that tickled my fancy, then outfit it with a couple of mirrored SSD's for the OS (and possibly data depending on size and budget). Add an external USB 3 drive to use for backups, and you're out the door for around a grand. |
You are either the most unlucky organization on the planet or "the cloud" isn't the problem. Anyway, if you're concerned only with single threaded performance it's pretty simple: Get the fastest clock speed you can afford and match it with the fastest disks and controller configuration you can get for your budget. Hopefully you put equal attention into the configuration and optimization of the DB itself. I'm partial to the HP Gen9's but if you want to save money and don't need current gear, there are a ton of refurb sellers out there. Quoted:
We've been around the block with trusting other companies. Linode, Rackspace, Hosting.com, Amazon. All either slow, unreliable or just suck. One of them actually deleted our virtual server and didn't have a backup. Also, been burned by outages at Sendgrid, authorize.net, google, godaddy, apple and others. I'm still trying to figure out what the heck he's doing that only uses a single thread.
