Yeah, you can do it, but it's not ideal. It's heavier and longer than a dedicated 5.56 can.

We have several customers who have bought 7.62 cans and use them on their 5.56 guns. Saves them money and makes the can more versatile.

Rarely sell a 5.56 can for a 5.56 gun, most people go 30 cal.  The only people that do it are those concerned with weight, or want to use exactly what they had in 'nam.

Safe, works well- usually within a few decibels of a 5.56 can.
Go 30 caliber if it is your first rifle silencer.

Is it true that gas blowback is often reduced with a .308 can on a 5.56?

Yes.

On my guns that have one I still don't have to switch the gas block to the suppressor setting.

Works great. I run a YHM Phantom Ti 762 on my AR. I expected it would be noticeably louder than my buddy's AAC M4-2000 556 but I think we decided my YHM sounded quieter to the ear. I went with the 762 for versatility and titanium so that it wasn't heavy.

Alright, dumb question for follow up.  30-06 = .30 caliber.  So you can use a .308 can on a 30-06?

Would a 308/7.62 can work on 7.62x39? Maybe thats a dumb question, but I've heard of stuff not being compatible that seems like it should be.

762x39 actually uses a bigger bullet then 762x51

762x39 = .310
762x51 = .308

I know silencerco advertised that the omega does both..

.30 can is larger volume/heavier, which makes up for the larger exit hole, -every bit as quiet as a dedicated 5.56 can on a 5.56.

Depends on the particular can.  30-06 burns more powder which means more pressure and volume of gas.  Some 30 cal suppressors are rated for it, but it's not a given.

My Gemtech HALO attaches over the A2 flash suppressor on my AR's. I wish Gemtech would make a .30 cal can with the same design for AR-10's.

My guess is everybody has gotten on the 'we sell a dedicated proprietary adapter' bandwagon so they can bilk us out of an extra hundred bucks for an adaptor for every gun we want to run our cans on.

Yes.  I chose to go with YHM QD.  If you don't want to leave a QD mount on a certain rifle, just spin it off when you are done.

Check with the manufacturer of your particular can, don't rely on the express unwritten consent of internet strangers.  Some cans do, some don't.
