Not really surprising, but still interesting when you look at the numbers.

The only reason the US doesn't file for bankruptcy and leave the entire country looking like Detroit is because the Treasury is creating trillions of dollars out of thin air.

I left in 2001 and the city was starting to show positive signs.  They had the new stadiums downtown, the casino's were coming, and private developers were developing high end units on the water front.  They had everything going for it but apparently the corrupt and racist Mayor's and city council decided to continue their corruption, greed, and racist ways which ran the city into the ground.

I was just back in Detroit on July 4th weekend.  Some buildings have been updated but just as many have now become abandoned.  A private developer could come in and turn the city around, especially with all the cheap property.  But they would be subject to the whims of the greedy, corrupt, and racist politicians there as well as union forces.  Buying up several blocks, gating it off, cleaning it up, and providing security would be possible in areas now.  But you would need union workers to do all that work as well as minority contractors.  Then you could expect to get sued by a minority contractor for something.  In the end it simply isn't worth it.  Huge houses for $10,000 and less and it is not worth it.  That is how bad the political climate is in Detroit.

I put a lot of blame on our national leaders too. Environmentalist wackos and their onerous laws have chased out manufacturing aided by things like NAFTA and free trade rhetoric.

Facts are for racists and dogmatists.  What you are seeing are the growing pains of a city that started from nothing and is striving to fight against racism and capitalism to earn the respect its hard working and dedicated populace deserves.  Democrats have done nothing but selflessly give to their denizens over the last several decades but the greed of the capitalists is too great of an obstacle to overcome.  Eventually they will need to apply force to overcome the self-serving attitudes of those stealing from their communities.

If you had to guess, what year do you think the USA passed 53% literacy? I can't find a solid source.. still looking. Just shocking to think how some sectors of humanity are marching backwards.. sadder still that this self-destruction was brought on by politicians who had their eyes wide open while it happened, and unflinchingly chose to do the wrong thing at every opportunity. When are we going to learn?

So who is in this with me.  We need about (at least) 50 families. We each buy a house for $500 bucks and make our own perimeter.  We can fight off the hoards and live like kings on the inside.  We will run our electricity off of solar/wind and grow our own food.  We can go out by night/day and scrounge up fuel/resources as needed.  It will be like the new American West  We can own our own piece of land/homestead for $500.  Once the word gets our about our survival more will come and we can build a new utopia.  So WHO IS IN WITH ME

They are now allowing a developer of section 8 housing to build on a premium piece of land down by the water. After the Mayor himself said "you don't want section 8 on the waterfront."

They never learn.

Yes, they bring in over a hundred million a year into the city's coffers.

Now the state is going to help finance a new hockey stadium for them. Because it will help Detroit and the rich guys in sports shouldn't have to foot the bill by themselves.

I've often wondered why investors don't do this. I think the answer would make me even sadder In the end, they probably realize that even at $500/lot, there is no profit to be made if things remain how they are.

I remember about five or so years ago when renovating the Joe Louis arena was being discussed a white contractor went to a city council meeting to ask questions about work only to be told he was the wrong color to be looking for contract work in Detroit.

The unfunny douchebags on WRIF's morning radio show were having a field day with it.

Detroit is a liberal democrat's utopia.

Prince Andrew wants casinos in NY for the same reason - so it doesn't collapse until after he is long gone.

In gun shops around MI it's still considered a selling point if an old gun has a history of having been used to kill a rioter in 1967.

There are more guns attributed to killing rioters than there were rioters killed. Or rioters, for that matter.
