Alright, I need a .22, anybody recommend anything? I'd prefer an autoloader. Also, it's my understanding that Ruger is anti assault weapons so I really don't want to buy one. Any suggestions?

.223 and .308 is ridiculous right now but I still want to shoot

You could get a .22 conversion kit for your AR.

I think most people overlook the anti-AWB and get a 10/22.  They are a standard with tons of aftermarket stuff as well.

I had a Marlin Model 70 semi-auto .22, which is also a good gun.  It's only weakness is unlike the 10/22 there isn't a huge selection of aftermarket stuff made specifically for it.

That right there may be a tad out of my league as I don't want to spend a whole lot on the rifle.

Ruger, eh? I don't lose any points on my man card for that?

What can I expect to pay for magazines with this?

I'm also thinking for the cost of the upper I could get a more than decent 22.

Hell no, I wish I would have bought one twenty years ago. I've got 5 .22's in my safe that never get fired now that I have a 10/22

I suggest a Ruger Bearcat! Love mine...

Yes, I realize you're wanting a longarm.

I grew up shooting clay pigeons (stationary) with a little 22 revolver. My dad and I had a lot of good times with that.

Get a ruger 10/22, I paid $142 at a sale at  academy for mine.  I bought a hoge stock and butler creek target barrel.  And put a scope on it. Now I can hit dimes and pennys all day long at 100 yards.

Get a Ruger 10/22. The Elmer Fudd mentality is rampant in the mostly east coast gun industry. Deal with it. Get over it. If you can't get over it, buy a used one. That way Ruger will not be getting the money,  and you can guy a gazillian accessories for it from companies that have no problem with so called "assault weapon" features.

It is the most versatile, customizable .22 out there. nothing else comes close.
