PARIS -- A gang of more than 20 youths -- thought to be North African immigrants -- terrorized hundreds of train passengers in a rampage of violence, robbery and sexual assault on New Year's Day, French officials said yesterday.
   The five-hour-long criminal frenzy was "totally unacceptable," French President Jacques Chirac told reporters. "Those guilty will be found and punished, as they deserve."
   The gang of between 20 and 30 youths boarded the train, heading from Nice on the French Riviera to Lyon, in eastern France, early on Jan. 1, as it carried 600 passengers home from New Year's Eve partying overnight.
   Once inside, they went wild, forcing passengers to hand over mobile phones and wallets, and slashing seats and breaking windows.
   A 20-year-old woman cornered by several of the marauders was sexually molested.
   "It was a real scene of pillage on the train," said the regional state prosecutor, Dominique Luigi, adding that the passengers were in a state of "panic."
   Train staff alerted police, and the train pulled into a station to wait. The three officers who initially turned up later were joined by reinforcements.
   A waitress in a bar near the station said two young women from the train had come inside in tears.
   "They told me there had been groping. They talked about sexual assaults. They were really traumatized," she said.
   The train resumed its journey with the heavy police presence on board but, just before Marseille, the youths pulled the emergency stop and many escaped.
   Only three -- two 19-year-old Moroccans and a minor, all living in France -- were arrested. Both men were being held for robbery and one also was facing charges of sexual assault. The minor was to be judged separately.
   Three others -- a man and two boys -- were arrested briefly in Marseille but were released despite reports they were carrying a knife, a screwdriver and a small amount of hashish. Police in Nice, meanwhile, said they had escorted the group of drunken youths and put them on the train Sunday to ensure they did not cause trouble in the city.
   Police said they thought the gang was part of a bigger group of 100 youths from the Marseille area who had gone to Nice and nearby seaside resorts for New Year's Eve, taking advantage of a special $1 New Year's Day train fare.
   News of the violence shocked France, which still was reeling from three weeks of rioting that flared in impoverished suburbs across the country in late October and early November last year.
   The opposition Socialist Party said it viewed the incident with "astonishment."
   It said "such acts show a worrying lack of security" and questioned why it took so long for police to rescue the passengers and why so few arrests were made.
   Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who has championed hard-line security policies in France, partly blamed the state rail company SNCF for not communicating better with the police.
   "The problem is that law-enforcement services didn't know that there was a promotional fare going," he said

I'm suprised there were 20 youths left to cause mayhem after the "severe repercussions" from the riots.

Sad, but true.  I was confronted by a robber in college and he seemed surprise when i produced an ASP baton and proceeded to beat the shit out of him.

He even tried to get the cops to arrest me for defending myself.

Couldn't be 10mm. 10mm down a narrow train aisle and you can cut your bangs by at least one third. 9mm and you have to go back to the baggage car for another case.

Where do you propose sending them to? Many of these immigrants started out as residents of former French holdings, and when the colony was granted self-rule, promises were made to allow anyone who wished to do so to come to France. You propose that France should go back on that promise?

More realistically, France and the rest of Europe needs to take the kid gloves off on their handling of criminal behavior . They criticize us for the number of Americans we incarcerate, but realistically, they are below the number of their citizens that should be behind bars.

Had some guy on campus declare that he was going to beat the shit out of me and actually go looking for me door to door and threatened anyone who knew me if they didn't tell him which room was mine. None of them did and he shoved a few around (only the ones who were alone at the time, natch) before stomping off trying to find me.

I wandered down to where some of them were hanging out and found out about this and told them I wasn't overly worried. I'm not in the best of shape and he's apparently on the football team. Nobody could understand why I wasn't worried about a confrontation until one said, "wait- he's always got a shitload of huge knives on him!" I figured from the guy's behavior that he was a pussy at heart, like most bullies, and would back down if he realized I was dead serious if he actually tried to hurt me. The next day we ran into each other and I called his bluff. Didn't even have to threaten him, show him a knife, or anything. I just told him to go screw himself and whatever his problem was he could get over it. He tried some tough talk, I told him he was full of shit and walked off. Never heard from him after somebody told him that I always keep a weapon handy for self-defense.

I'd much rather walk away from a confrontation like that than escalate it and I'm glad it turned out the way it did. If he had tried to attack me I'd have pulled a knife and told him to back off. If that didn't deter him... Well, that's why I have a knife, isn't it. Still don't know what I did to piss him off so much.

Even the little 2" pocket knife I always have in my pocket will easily reach a carotid just below and behind the ear.  You would just not go waving it about like it was a machete.  You would not want your assailant to know you had it until it bit him. I would not stand by and let my wife be assaulted. I might get killed but I would die like a man.

I have also come up with a ploy to put the an assailant less on guard.  I would be saying things like "Please don't hurt me" " I'll do whatever you want", etc.  Even in the event of a home invasion I am going to do this. The perps will be so amazed when the lead starts flying.

I hate to admit this on ARFCOM, but one of my favorite people in the world is a Frenchman.  Fred Perrin (inventor of the "La Griffe" style of knife).  If you all a little like him, there would not be too many problems.  

There are many solutions, unleashing the army, letting the cops do crowd control with real guns, CCW, etc.  The problem is that your .gov needs to realize that they need a solution that does not involve mediation.  You are being invaded/overrun, not with people necessarily, but with an idea, that everything not  Muslim is inferior and needs to be destroyed.  This is something that cannot be negotiated with, and thus needs to be dealt with in kind.

+1, this being why sometimes I like to carry a knife (or better ) at the back of my right hip, where my wallet would be.  That way, if they want my wallet, I can pull the "ok, ok, let me get my wallet" trick or if they're threatening me, I can pretend I'm going to pay them off if they'll just leave me alone.  Nice to know I'm not the only one with a deviant mind
