I just feel better that a poorly-governed, all blue shithole with a massive homeless population had the first US case.

I trust the socialists to stay the course with their gun control agenda and not be distracted by a potential pandemic.

I'm just going to leave this here, well in advance, before the ice melts. Seems like the right place to drop a deuce.

For the past 15,000 years, a glacier on the northwestern Tibetan Plateau of China has hosted a party for some unusual guests: an ensemble of frozen viruses, many of them unknown to modern science. Scientists recently broke up this party after taking a look at two ice cores from this Tibetan glacier, revealing the existence of 28 never-before-seen virus groups. Melting ice from climate change could release the pathogens into the environment, one researcher said, calling it a "worst-case scenario."

In these threads we usually get two types of folks....the type who have a functional understanding of how the public health system operates and some level of knowledge regarding how infectious disease migrates.....and folks who have neither.

The former generally take a measured, maybe even cautious posture and wait for more data. The latter either say it's all bullshit hype, or its TEOTWAWKI.

Nice to see that as usual, both sides are well represented

what the media is not telling anybody is that the death rate is actually much higher.

It is taking people 2 weeks to die from this from what I have seen.

Death lags cases by about 2 weeks.

So 17 deaths out of 500 cases is not accurate.

It is 17 deaths out of the number of cases 2 weeks ago, which I think was much less than 100. ( ETA 2 weeks ago there were 59 suspected cases, none confirmed ) do the math.

so the death rate is above 20% of confirmed cases

hopefully there are lots of unconfirmed mild cases where people do not seek medical attention, but we don't know this yet.

If the actual number of confirmed cases is being under-reported and the death rate is accurate, then it's not that bad. If everything is being under-reported and the death lags behind, then yeah, the percentage would be higher. People should still take the same precautions if this wasn't even on the news. I do. Unless this thing comes knocking on my door; I think the Ebola outbreak was much worse.

The thing with Ebola was that with the exception of aid workers, it impacted civilizations that don't travel internationally. Meanwhile, a plan of kinds from this now-quarantined area in China is here in the US. That is the difference.

Ebola also wasn't airborne....it required droplet contamination (you had to get the affected patients fluids on you)
if this new thing is airborne, you catch it by being in proximity with a symptomatic carrier. Big difference in terms of propagation.

Motaba was in the movie Outbreak

There were cases of Ebola here in the States too. Of the 4, 1 resulted in death. But I mean look at the ratios. 2014-2016 Ebola Outbreak Ebola had high mortality rates (I wonder if any of those cases were under-reported also). Either way, regardless of the types of viruses and their methods of propagation: airborne, direct contact, through fluids, it's important to take precautions. That's why when stuff like this becomes news I'm like alright, just keep doing what I'm doing. No sense in panicking.

I have always thought that actions speak louder than words.

The fact that China has quarantined a major city of over 11 million people ( more people than NYC ) by air, rail, and road blocks speaks volumes.

This is unprecedented.

This article says " private road transport is still allowed" but is ambiguous if that means out of the city or just inside the city Another article I read said roads were blocked by police and military for leaving the city.

Now 2 more cities have similar quarantine restrictions.

From The Financial Times:

The measures in Wuhan, which include closing all public transport in and out of the city of more than 10m, went into effect at 10am local time ahead of China’s lunar new year holiday, when hundreds of millions travel across the country. Private road transport was still allowed.

Authorities later extended similar restrictions to Huanggang city, south-east of Wuhan. Residents were told not to leave without a special reason, according to an announcement on a city government website. In the nearby city of Ezhou, trains were stopped from leaving or entering the city.

A 2nd city in China is now on lock down.

China coronavirus: Wuhan and Huanggang on lockdown
13 minutes ago

A second Chinese city will go into lockdown in an effort to control the spread of a new virus which has left 17 dead in the country.

Authorities have suspended planes and trains in and out of Wuhan - a city of 11 million people - as well as buses, subways and ferries.

Similar measures will take effect in nearby Huanggang, a city of more than seven million, as of midnight...

Fears Mount as Cases of China’s Viral Pneumonia Surge Exponentially

It started with a light cough. He burped constantly, and complained of shortness of breath.

Family members thought it was no big deal. The doctor said he seemed to have heart problems and suggested him to stay in the hospital. He appeared healthy except for a minor infection in one lung area.

Two weeks later, he was dead, with both lungs infected and organ failure.

The virus has already spread across the country to 17 provinces and regions.

Coronaviruses are known for their adaptability and can change very quickly, according to Michael Lai, a molecular biologist with the Taiwanese institute Academia Sinica.

“The virus can more easily replicate across humans,” which could make it more contagious, Lai said.

China ‘Handles’ Eight People for Posting About Wuhan Virus on Social Media

Local police in Wuhan, China, revealed they had “handled” the cases of eight individuals accused of publishing statements not approved by the Communist Party on social media regarding the deadly respiratory disease that recently originated in that city, Radio Free Asia (RFA) revealed on Tuesday.
***
“Some internet users have been publishing and forwarding fake news without verification, which has had an adverse social impact,” the police department statement reportedly read. “Eight people who engaged in illegal activities were summoned and their cases handled according to law, following a police investigation.”

The statement went on to vow to “punish” those posting comments on social media that the Communist Party disapproves of regarding the outbreak.

My takeaways thus far:

- Since when is China "cautious" about the safety of its citizenry?
- When the fuck was the last time a city with a population of 11 million was quarantined?
- ...and now several cities with populations ranging from 1-11 million are going on lockdown?

Think about the chaos this would cause if a few of our big cities were going through this. No tin foil but this is obviously a bigger deal than they are letting on.

The Chinese sure are overreacting if not. They’ve had plenty of viruses in the past and all they did was kill chickens and pigs. They’ve never quarantined anything.

Multiple people of working age collapsing in the street?!!?!?!  means multiple things to me(not an expert but refute my logic):
1. those people didn't INSTANTLY get so bad they couldn't walk and fell over, they were sick and getting worse for a while before they went down, os MASSIVE spread could be expected.
2. Multiple people filming coughed a significant cough.
3. the hospital waiting room was 100% over whelmed, as in 100%  shoulder to shoulder, all in masks. Now sure some of those were hypochondriacs earlier that day, now... now they ARE infected.
4. One of the down in public people appeared to be a well dressed business person. Meaning he worked in an office, which would have a boss, who would most likely  have connections to move his family, and himself out of there via plane, or limo, or whatever bribing police as they went.
5. We saw multiple tents outside the hospital. If current mortality is 2% with full top notch medical care, what is the untreated mortality with stretched thin resources, vs run out of IV bags resources?

Anyone who has ever been to China - particularly to a "provincial" city - knows that their standards for coughing (or covering one's mouth when then hock up a lung) are completely different than anything you'd see elsewhere in the world.

And we wonder why China is a source of disease that is spread primarily through coughing.

Why does India have such shitty sanitation but does not contribute things like SARS to the rest of the world?  Only antibiotic resistant STDs.

5. We saw multiple tents outside the hospital. If current mortality is 2% with full top notch medical care, what is the untreated mortality with stretched thin resources, vs run out of IV bags resources?
The fatality rate must be a lot higher.

Taking current cases and current fatalities is not accurate because there is a 1-3 week delay from symptoms to death.

So a more accurate death rate would be to take the number of cases there were 2 weeks ago and use that.

2 weeks ago there were 59 suspected cases

18 / 59 is 30%

This would explain the lock down of 20+ million people in 7 cities with a virus that spreads as easily as the common cold.
