Yes it is possible. I knew of several. One of my drills in basic (1987 Ft. Leonardwood) was a reservist.

My Father-in-Law was a Drill SGT. in the US Army Reserves, in the 70's and 80's. He retired as a Master SGT.
I don't know the specifics, but he is not one to bullshit me, or try to impress me. If he says he was, he was. ETA: I think he also did more than the average duty cycles. |

We had reserve Drill Sgts, for a few weeks during Basic training. Ft Jackson 1975.
One of them fell while running backwards during a road march. Broke his hand. |

When I did OSUT at Benning in '88 we had reserve drill instructors for 2 weeks. They weren't very impressive.

My LRSD shared an armory with a reserve DI unit. They used to come around and expect our privits to treat them like they were in a training enviroment. The CO turned a blind eye to the complaints that our airborne troopies tended to tell the "Overweight POS Leg in a Smokey the Bear hat" to go pound sand on a fairly regular basis.

I was one. So yes, it is possible.
A 3/417th Inf, 4th Bde (Infantry OSUT), 76th Division (Tng) An excellent unit. During the Gulf War FORSCOM asked for the unit, by name, to be activated. Of course, I had been on active duty for a while, but my Brigade kicked ass. We had a ton of Vietnam vets, some Korea vets, and a WWII vet who retired in 1984. |

100th Div is a reserver training unit that pushes troops...out of Tenessee. I just went through trainging with 2 of em'. Cool guys!

When I was at Knox (1990) the junior drill in my company was AGR (active Gruard/Reserve). Once I got to my duty station in the reserves the Chief that ran the unit was AGR as was our 1SG. They were all reserve, but worked full time. The rest of the unit was one weekend a month including us ROTC pukes.
My neighbor in 1993- 1995, a Kansas Coyote (KC-135 driver), was not even AGR but flew like 80% of the month for the two years we lived next to one anohter. His dad was the wing commander, but I got hte impression that those tankers were in serious demand. Even before the current OIF and such you could make a living as a reservist if you had the right branch/MOS etc. |

D 2/19. If it was the summer of '88, I'm guessing that a full unit of reserve drill instructors got distributed to all the different battalions. |

I had Reserved drill sergeants when I went through OSUT at Fort Benning in the summer/fall of 1995.
It sucked. At first thought, people always tell me, "Oh damn, that must've been slack city since they were Reservists." Bullshit. Typically, with active duty drill sergeants, you get all the typical harassment/etc over with in the first few days or weeks. After a while you stop playing grab ass and you drill sergeants start to ease up on you a little bit as you prove that you're not a bunch of spastic kids anymore. Not so with our Reservist drill sergeants. All throughout our cycle.... every 2 weeks was just like the first day all over again as we got new drill sergeants in. Since it was the first day for them, well it must've been the first day for the trainees too, right? Not only that, but as Reservists these guys felt they had something to prove, not only to us, but to the active duty drill sergeants as well. |

What company, time frame were you? I was at Leonard Wood in 87, too. One of the guys I work with was a drill in another company than mine while I was going through BCT there. |

I was in C/35th starting in June 1987. Our Head instructor was SFC(?) Heberling if I remember correctly, and we had a couple of SSG Jones too. |

ALL my Drill Sergeants at basic were reservists. There was a TRADOC exercise at Ft. Polk in the summer of 1987 called Lone Ironman, a test to see if the 95th Training Div. could take a bunch of recruits and run them through Basic. We had about a dozen different Drills, all coming in fresh every two weeks, and only the Senior Drill stayed for the whole cycle.

OK, now you have me wondering if I have the batallion designation right. Too many numbers rolling around in my tired brain. I will double check the unit, but I am almost positive it C/35 batallion 135th Engineer Brigade. |

I was in B 6-10 The summer of 93, 31st and 35th ENG BN were also there at that time.
There are very, very few MOS's and jobs that exist in the active Army that you won't find in the reserve componets also, but there are jobs that are only found in the USAR. |

C 1/50th here. July 88-Oct 88. We have about 8 of the reserve DI's assigned for two weeks. They tried to act like hardasses, but we tended to make fun of them. They tried to smoke us once but couldn't. Our regular DI's just watched it and tried to keep from laughing. |
