Fucking bunch of whining assholes. Asked for info explaining how to fit a new trigger, thumb and grip safeties and got the immediate response from a moderator that I should not bother and go right to a gunsmith.. Then the guy tries to insult me when I question as to why he recommends a 'smith to everyone who asks a DIY question. Then he just goes right to the insult.. These guys seem to think they are some elite gun gurus or whatever. on guy wrote how it is the 20-30 years of experience that you pay a gunsmith for, blah, blah. John Browning didn't take that long to design all of his weapons combined.. What a bunch of looney fucks.. |

I threw a new trigger and mainspring housing in my 1911 with no problem at all. No custom fitting needed. Not sure about the grip and thumb safeties, but I'd at least give it a whirl before dropping good money on a 'smith. The biggest problem I had with mine was getting that flat, fingered, pain in the ass (main)spring back where it belongs.

I know. And I'll do fine with I'm sure. A couple of members there IM'd me some good info. The guys on the gunsmith forum are a bunch of elitist asswipes and I guess they don't want to polute their ranks by teaching people how to DIY on 1911's. They are a lot simpler than a M92 or any of the modern semiautos out there yet these guys try to act like gods when they decide to spew their rhetoric.. |

just go get a decent book and some files thats what I did go slow with handtools you really need a book and pictures for te thumb safety it is much easier just to show you pics and there is the safety element there the trigger just sand down the top and bottom till it will fit into the frame and is reasonably snug grip safetys are a drop in unless you need to radius the rear of the frame but then you need jig and have to refinsh it |

Thats what I had planned. But apparently it's an art that takes generations to learn and perfect. I found one thread where a guy had asked for some info. He wrote that he had a trained watchmaker and a trade machinist and a complete machine shop at his disposal to complete the simple task at hand. Guess what? Take it to a gunsmith.. Way to complicated, even for a journeyman machinist. Unfucking real.. Can anyone access their site? I want to post the transcript of the thread here.. |
LOL Im a moron but I taught myself with a POS Essex and a book in 1 evening Frame stuff is pretty easy the slide to barrel to frame fit is where the magic comes into play |
I'm gonna get the jig and radius it and fit a Smith and Alexander beavertail on it. Then When I am all done repark the frame. I have the stuff to do it at home. Done a lot of small parts for my Garnds on the kitchen stove that look like they were done by a gunsmith.. |

I am a member there. I never had a problem with my questions. I had some problems with installing a grip safety on my GI. I posted the question and got a good link from another member. Went home and installed a Kings wide grip safety myself vs the $170 I was quoted from a smith. I even bought the grip safety from the exchange section on the sight from another member. You can do the work yourself, dont let someone tell you you cant, just be carefull, you can make some expensive mistakes messing with your 1911. |

There is good advice on there. My huge ass complaint about that site is that you cannot give your honest opinion about a gunsmith if that opinion is negative. If you had XYZ Gunsmithing build you a 1911 and it sucked balls, if you post that information they will delete the thread or lock it. So basically, if some guy posts asking if he should send a 1911 to XYZ Gunsmithing, nobody is going to say no, they suck. I think that is just plain out wrong. |

Valkyrie, I sent you a PM over there. Spend some time over at www.homegunsmith.com and www.blindhogg.com. The mods and staff on that board must quake in their boots at the thought of being sued. You can't even ask how much a gun is worth. There are some good folks there but the mods are way too heavy-handed IMO, and some of them are short on patience. |
I've gone to that site for information, which is usually pretty helpful. I don't hesitate to do work on my 1911. I just make sure I have all the knowledge before I get started. Only thing I cannot (and won't) do is fitting a bbl or cutting dovetails for sights. With that said, I have installed match bbl bushing, grip safety, match trigger, and hammer(all from Wilson Combat), and even checkered my front strap. All of which required some amount of fitting, but the service tech at Wilson let me know how to do it. It is much more rewarding to do it yourself IMO (+ you save a bunch of money for more ammo )Mark |
| Yeah, they kinda come off as snobby sometimes. The 1911 really brings out alot of emotion in some folks. I have been a member there for years but don't go there much at all. There is alot of knowledge there if you tread lightly on their egos and precious 1911 mentality. |

I'd been a member there for a while when I posted about my new high-end SA breaking after 20 rounds (thumb safety) and how one of tehe grip screw busings self-destructed while I was putting new grips on the gun. Got a couple nasty posts about how I must be a ham-fisted home gunsmith and how dare I say that the gun broke. I must have caused all the problems. In another section of the forum I was getting a bunch of IMs asking me what I had done to mod my S&W 1911 (one of the first on the market) (since I had put an S&A magwell and a carbon fiber trigger, along with nicer grips). One of the guys that IM'd me for advice on the S&W was also one of the idiots that was flaming me in public in the SA section over complaining about my broken $1600 gun.  Rarely go back there these days. |
