Ive never used a PSA.

It functions and fires on par with my Colt, BCM, and Armalite.  I have two Larues that will outshoot it, but the SOLGW is much lighter than all of them.

My chrome lined CHF mid from PSA shoots alright. The non chrome lined phosphate and nitride barrels I’ve tried have been junk.

PSA has good lowers though. I’d buy a PSA complete lower before I’d buy a DD complete lower even if they were equal price. PSA just needs a heavier buffer instead of that plastic tipped black  trash they call a buffer.

These threads always crack me up. It shows how little people know about how much testing and evaluating goes into selecting equipment and guns at the Tier 1 units. It is quite extensive and is a big deal to be selected. DEV also has special requirements because of salt water on their equipment. For instance, DEVs quad nods are heavier than CAGs because of the water requirement.

This is a great podcasts that goes into it a little bit. It also talks about some of the most prolific weapons during the GWOT. John was the head armorer at NSWDG. I could listen to him for hours without Kevin, who is almost unbearable.

I can’t imagine why people believe they would be worth what they charge.

They don’t make a thing.

Admittedly, I’m an LMT fan, but I also believe they bring something different to the table.

My LMT is pretty good. Don’t love the MIM gas key and MIM safety. Barrel finish is thin. Pistol grip is tacky. Replaced it with a Colt A2. Accuracy is barely acceptable for a chrome lined M4 profile. Recoil spring wore out prematurely. I do like the upgraded charging handle and stock though.

Depends on what you’re actually paying.

Finding the Mk1 on sale is a pain, but the anodized version can be had for under $2400. Might be able to find a better deal on black friday.

If, and this is a big IF, it comes with everything you want, and you’re not going to change out any parts, then it’s not too god-awful. Still expensive, but no longer a slap in the face like HK’s pricing.

It’s still almost $800 more than a Super Duty when those are on sale.

I get that this is probably a pretty small contract, maybe a couple hundred rifles at most, but I don’t know why Hodge is even in the running. They make what, six rifles a year? “If you know, you know you're full of shit!”

KAC can’t keep up with their existing contracts, think the SS dumped them because they couldn’t get spare parts, and they were shit when run suppressed. Now they’re supplying the UK military… How many rifles is that, twenty?

LMT’s QC has been going to shit the past few years, and they haven’t really done shit since the Mlok MRP uppers. I still think they’re shitasses that bought off a judge in their suit against Colt to corner the market on monolithic uppers, Colt’s design was entirely different, and that judge was either crooked or dumber than a box of fucking rocks.

All joking aside, I do find it wild that SOLGW beat four of the biggest names in the AR market. I would’ve bet good money on Geissele winning.

Pretty typical for both this rifle and my other G$.

I have other rifles that shoot far better including but not limited to a stainless 1:9 Colt, a chrome lined Armalite and a nitrided Ballistic Advantage. Hell my 350  Legend Aero shoots better with hunting ammo!

Probably just that barrel not liking 77gr, I’d try something 62 to 69 grain before writing it off altogether.

That said, ~2 MOA with one’s preferred defensive load is good enough for me, provided that it’s consistent. 55gr soft points and 64gr bonded loads are a far cry from match ammo.

G ain’t the best, but it is the best cost to value ratio available when you catch them on sale, edging out DD by QC, (lol, canted rails, anyone?) non-retarded furniture, and including a G trigger. That’s something like $300+ in crap that doesn’t need to be replaced.

Edgy bro. Noveske made a bunch of AR configurations at a very high level, especially shorter barrels, when no one else was doing it. They also made many of their own parts, including barrels. Their prices turned a lot of folks off.

SOLGW has a great reputation for 12.5" guns, 16" guns, and for a long time was one of the better values running for a duty rig.

Their prices have shot up and so they aren't a bargain leader in the same way.

They offer way more customization than DD or Geissele, which keeps them in a unique market place.

Calm down. I have one of their 12.5 guns and its fine. They made their bones assembling good rifles with good marketing and outreach to LE. Much like Noveske sourced good parts and made good rifles. Both have went down the lifestyle marketing path and KAC level pricing. More power to them. I hope both companies are wildly successful but it is what is.

I don't care what people choose to buy or why they choose it. PSA or KAC makes no difference to me. Almost nobody shoots them anyway.

Which ones actually manufacture? I guess that's a broader question but if you're entering the world of gucci ar's I'd give heavier weight to ones that actually make their own stuff, and i don't know which of those do.  I'm okay with buying forgings and finishing those out but buying bukkake laser etch branded guns made by someone else has always made me scratch my head. so many companies just assemble parts made by someone else and slap their name on the side of it.

I get that General is usually just for complaining about stuff, and trying to be constructive or helpful is probably a waste of time, but oh well... guess I'm not that smart.

BA doesn't make our barrels, hasn't for a few years either.  They worked well enough for a long time, but those days are gone.

As for all the "we just buy other people's parts and assemble them"... that used to be true in the past, not so much the last few years.

Gas blocks, charging handles, rails, receivers, buffer tubes, barrels, springs... we've been having our parts made to rather demanding prints for a while now... and that catalog is rapidly expanding.

Are we 100% our own designs now? No.  Will we ever be? Also no.  Until we know of a way to improve upon a part, we're not going to make it differently just so "it's ours", or we own the chips from cutting it.  Milspec bolts and extractors are pretty well figured out... we didn't feel the need to reinvent them, until we had a need to.  Same thing with mag catches, A2 flash hiders, QD end plates, etc.

If we're not your cup of tea, that's fine ... we make fewer guns a month than some of the big legacy brands make in a day.  We couldn't replace those brands if wanted to. We build our rifles one at a time still, no assembly line... just one armorer from stripped parts up thru test fire, not because it's efficient (it's not), but because of the end result that comes from it.

Anyone that has taken our class knows we're pretty complementary of other brands that put out a trustworthy product too.  They also probably picked up a thing or two on how we approach building a rifle.

The last couple years, several of us have been neck deep working on Mk1. That kept us pretty busy on the R&D side, and kept us from traveling and teaching.  Pretty soon you'll see a lot of those lessons learned trickle down into other parts that we decided to redesign, and classes being offered all over the country.  We've been talking about "SOLGW 2.0" for a little while now... Mk1 is just one part of it.  I'd say more, but SHOT Show isn't too far off now.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a half dozen parts to go order on Tumu and rebrand for our next SOCOM contract finish writing prints for.

Little critique for you guys, a definitive weight would be nice to include in the spec sheets for the standard configurations of each model.

“Around six pounds” is a little vague when the asking price is over $2k.

Performance, total package price, and the ability to deliver on the contract are also evaluated.

Being able to make a thousand rifles is one thing. Making a thousand of them to spec, and getting them delivered on a timetable, is another. Ditto for providing all the spare components included in the contract.

That’s why I’m surprised one of the big players didn’t win out, since four of the other manufacturers make so much of their stuff in-house.

It's also easy for certain requirements to be made that only one company could meet. The armad is going to outlast g and dd barrels. With the titanium and how much they milled off the handguard I'm sure there was a weight requirement too. Those 2 things could have disqualified g and dd right there ?????

Laser texturing each rail also adds cost and machine time, though I’m a little skeptical that it’s worthwhile. More open cutouts for ventilation is great and all, but gloves only do so much to protect from heat.

Yep. Put a few extra advertising dollars in your budget would go a long way. Show how things are done. You may have proprietary fixtures or processes that you wouldn't want to show. But show you aren't a "parts assembler" would shed you of that image.

Have a M4. It's okay, nothing special, but I got it for cheaper than what crazy price they ask for now. Was it even worth it back then? Meh. Won't shoot steel ammo and when i called to ask them why, I was told I shouldn't be shooting that shit anyway. Fair enough, but when you have a metric shitton of it, you kinda want to go with that.
As a pure assembly company, I prefer Mitchel Defense's rifles much more. The shot impulse is odd to explain, but it just feels nicer to shoot.
All that said, at this point, unless you're making all the stuff yourself, these assembly companies have serious diminishing returns on their rifles above the price of maybe $1,300.
I'm sure someone is gonna chime in with Hodge Defense, since he doesn't make anything inhouse, but I don't own one so can't agree/troll one way or the other.

What makes your rifle better than a BCM REECE to SOLGW REECE for an extra $1100?

Marketing and branding are important and cater to the perceptions (not realities) of buyers.  Just as good is not showing much effort.

I think their would be a lot of interest in uppers with the ARMAD barrels. Probably a lot of guys who wouldn’t swing for a complete rifle but would for an upper with the new barrels.

Yepisode. I would like to try one of the ARMAD barrels. The life expectancy is really interesting. The price would probably be pretty steep, but would like to try one out.

We made parts for them for a while.

We got tired of the credit card roulette.

Owner calls me “the Jew” because I want payment for parts made.

Washed our hands  with them.

We make 98% of all our parts in house.

Most like very very most don’t make shit, it’s all marketing.

Who are “we”?

What parts?

Did they ever reject any of your parts for not meeting their specs? If so what did you do with those returned parts?

I assumed from location Stag Arms. You got anymore of those Chinese raptor charging handles…

With how difficult it is to win a contract at the JSOC level, this is great marketing. It is obvious that they put a lot into the Mk1.

Going to have to ride that JSOC cock long and hard, because there aren’t all that many guntubers that’ll actually  buy and review a $2700 rifle, it’s usually just the paid shills “reviewing” those. The only videos I found for the Mk1 were basically ad reads from shops that carry SOLGW stuff, a couple paid “reviews,” and the typical sub-500 round “initial impressions” type stuff.

Not to mention the lead times that’re going to go up with them fulfilling that contract.

My humble understanding is they started out with reasonable parts, good assembly, and reasonable price.  Good assembly made them better than most parts assemblers out there.  I think they lost that reasonable price bit a while ago.

I think the fan boys that I knew that were originally recommending them have left for different pastures - don't know if they kept one around as a truck gun or not.

I don't know what the contract details are for, but if its relatively small, do you think some of the big players (by name or volume) don't put as much effort into it as they may another contract? Like if it was for say 100 rifles (these numbers are just for discussion purposes) do you think KAC is thinking we could sell 100 rifles on the commercial market if we wanted to, we'll just throw something out there and if it stick great if not no biggie.  Whereas a smaller company is really invested 100% to try and win?

Their in store prices are in line with DD & G$. That’s probably deliberate. Not trying to compete with under $1,000 Colt or under $500 Andro. Instead going after that $1400 - $1800 market segment of people that want a “nice” AR with some pride in ownership without spending HK or KAC money.

Companies can charge what they want.  Complaining about the price won't usually get you anywhere.

Value adds from SOLGW?  Billet upper, lower, and handguard.  Laser-engraved rail.  Unique controls.  Proprietary barrel.  It sounds like they didn't just pull a number out of the air, but are pricing the MK1 relative to their development investments.

The last thing I want in a rifle like an AR is “proprietary” or “unique”.  I want to be able to swap out parts with whatever I want.  The standardization of the platform and wide availability of essentially drop in parts is a big component of the greatness of the AR.  If I want proprietary I’m not getting an AR.
