Ambassador appointments are nothing more than political payoffs. Look at John Tester for a good example. His pivotal vote on Obamacare and his record of voting with the administration something like 97% of the time bought him an appointment as ambassador to China.

There are political appointments, and there are ones reserved for actual professionals. Getting a competent, professional diplomat assigned as US ambassador to your country is not something to be proud of.

Bet you're wrong. As said above, Ambassadors to small friendly countries are generally pretty clueless. The real work is done by the career Foreign Service Officer who is Chief of Mission. The Ambassador goes to cocktail parties. Same in every administration.

LOL, but there actually are Dutch-speaking people in Belgium; it's divided between the French, German and Dutch-speakers. Used to be part of the Netherlands, too.
