Recently, a YouTuber goldenwebb did a meltdown test of a super duty. It did the best out of all the ARs they’ve done this “test” to. Fired almost twice as many rounds as the KAC could handle. Video can be found here:

Geissele Super Duty Meltdown

Apparently, Geissele asked for the upper back so they could to an autopsy on it. They take an in depth look at what failed and why, and came up with an interesting challenge at the end of the video. Video can be found here:

GOLDENWEBB SUPER DUTY MELTDOWN AUTOPSY

I found it really interesting. Figured some of you on here would as well.

Updated Geissele HBAR meltdown video here:

Watched it, good breakdown.  Curious as to their solutions make a higher gas block using a straight tube and a heavy profile barrel.  Cant wait to see the results.

Im seeing a few guns and parts to use straight gas tubes instead of regular style as they say often the gas tubes fail at the bend.

Should make provisions in the upper handguard for support of the gas tube.

Slots or holes drilled across the forend, a few custom bolts with a cradle to support the tube. Can't droop.

I was really disappointed on how long the KAC he tested made it. But, it's always been known your MOA will open up with their profile pretty quick, expected them to last longer though.

I'd have liked them to scope the barrel, just out of interest. I'm a hodge profile guy myself, which many makers do as well... DD is slacking on their profiles.

I don’t think geissele has the production capacity to make that many rifles and maintain their civilian sales and the high level of quality they are known for. It’s still a relatively small company.

If they used  a nitrided or iconel gas tubes they should be able to go as far as the barrel allows.  At least the gas tube won’t be the weak link.

Q: why hasn’t anyone come up with a better gas tube?

Heavier weight, or with radiating fins to dissipate the heat faster/better? I know we’re talking freaking superhot jets of gas here, just curious.

I’ve seen other meltdown videos and that’s the place that seems to fail first in the better quality AR pattern rifles.

Answer for your question and the others above is actually touched on in the G video - they want the gas tube to blow out first so the gun stops cycling, rather than a bullet exiting the side of the barrel as it heats, droops and eventually melts. Instead of taking a bullet through your hand, the guns stops shooting and saves both you and possibly other (more expensive) components.

Makes sense to me, esp considering the AR isn't really supposed to be an LMG. If you can't kill it with 901 rounds of continuous fire, it's probably time to change tactics anyway

This, it’s a safety valve. Gas tube blows out, it’s a $15 part swap. A fairly easy one with the G rail, too.

Even so, gas tubes usually last what, 600-800 rounds of nonstop F/A? And LW barrels only last a couple hundred more than that before exceeding the heat treatment threshold.

Barrel loses its heat treat, it can pop at any time, which is bad news. It could pop immediately, or it could cool off and last another hundred rounds, only to suddenly explode out of nowhere.

In a situation where 1k full auto rounds didn't solve the problem then your AR blowing up in your hands is also probably not going to solve anything either.

As far as I know they haven't tested for when the bullets rupture the sides of the barrel.  They may very well have hundreds or thousands more shots before the next item breaks.

The gas tube failing so spectacularly when all of the other components seem mostly unharmed and still functional says to me they are leaving some on the table.

Standard gas tube could very well be the 5amp fuse in an otherwise 50amp allowable system.

Furthermore,  G is playing with ideas and tweaking things to push the limits, removable threaded support bolts for the gas tube was my suggestion.  It's not even impractical to do nothing to a super duty except drill and tap the handguard in a few spots and install bolts once installed to get extra life out of the tube in the most extreme circumstances.

The idea of actually shooting that much that fast to get to failure is absurd.

I'm pretty sure I'll be fine with my G, even if there's zombies.

But it is cool to see them looking at options to go even more rounds before failure of the gas tube.

G did good!

I’d still rather carry a 6720 all day than ANY heavy barreled 10 pound gun.

As others have said, I’m not sure of any real life application where an AR failed in combat from prolonged full auto.

It’s a fun thought experiment, but for me, I just need it to go bang reliably. I’ll take 300 rounds, as long as it goes bang next 300 rounds.

Same.

I could see a manufacturer doing this kind of test to see if the gas tube will indeed fail first. Other than that this is just useless clickbait.

I think people are missing the fact that the barrel was also drooping.  While you may get some more rounds out of that barrel, I doubt you are getting any accuracy.  It was fried by the time the gas tube let go.

Not to sound argumentative - I don’t mean it that way at all - but since people keep talking about he gas tube being the weak point, I just was curious if beefing that up would help it last longer in extreme situations.
