Update 5/14 Last day of classes for some of my Seniors.
Students got the gate going up and down. Needs a little tweaking and paint. We also need to add a motion sensor, and the code to go with it, but we should have it installed in the next day or two.  More vikings in the tower.  As @brass suggested... we added some lights to the bottom of the keel.  Crew member displayed on the ghost bow.  More members of the crew displayed.    Dragon eyes got mostly done over the weekend. We will add some eye lids today, then stain will begin.  Before we put up the lungs, we are painting the inside of the chest cavity with copper paint. They got a little ways through it yesterday.  Dragon Lungs test #2 Slower speed. We had to print shorter actuator arms as it was getting real close to the inside dimensions of the chest cavity. Update 5/15
We are going to get a group picture today before everyone leaves for State track and soccer. I didn't grab a lot of pictures yesterday, as Seniors were signing the project, and getting not quite finished room pictures for their portfolios. We will attempt to get the lungs installed today. I know we fit them once before, and there was room for a drill to get screws in, but we will see if that still holds today. Students started getting shields up yesterday. Attaching them was a little bit of a question. The frame on the rail of the ship is pretty narrow. We were worried about splitting it. We ended up hot gluing(shocking, I know ) them in place, then using the brad nailer to sink a few into the rail. I think they will be fine. You can also see we started adding plastic bubbles along the bottom of the keel. They are looking good. We are about 1/3rd done there. Smaller beads and glass will probably be added over the coming days.   We also got a few dragon skulls hung over the entryways and balconies of our castle. They look really cool.  I'll grab some close ups of them later today. |

Yes. Exactly. Then you should add an LED strip to the same Arduino so on the exhales the light goes brighter and then dims off on the other cycle of the "breath" to really add it up. |

Update 5/16
Very busy day yesterday. We got more crew members up at the end of the day. We are getting some "sitting" vikings in the boat now.   Students continued to add more bubbles and beads to the bottom of the keel.  One more Valkyrie up on the wall.   The dragon head got eye lids, and we began staining it.  The lungs were so healthy.....  But! They were a tad too big with how low they hung after being mounted to the bottom of the spine. We had to move the lower lobes in a bit, and take off foam on the outside.  We also ended up shortening the actuator arms, as well as the cams inside the mechanism to limit the movement down a bit more.  We fitted the heart to the lungs, and they seem to be able to work in this configuration.  We got the lungs installed and are working on the heart. We need to get some longer wires for the arduino inputs, but we think that may be later today.  Seniors getting ready for the pictures.   Most of our Crew for 2023-2024

Update 5/17
We've got one week, and two days after Memorial Day to get this all wrapped up. It's going to be close! Robotics says they are coming in this morning, they are seniors, and going to finish wiring up the heart and lungs. We are waiting on that so we can install the legs......which are making installing our dragon rider delayed. The wiring just needs some extensions for the lungs, but everything is ready.   We had to take the gate apart yesterday and sand down some paint that got into the channel. It is also all set, other than a power cored to the outlet. I'm hoping I see that hooked up today too. We can't push the castle back into place and add the fog until this is done.  We have one more addition to the castle. An flying dragon. It will get a patina today over the paint, then installed.   Skull details.   Initial stain on the dragon head. We may add some texture of some kind to the sides of the face. They are a little bland.   The dragon's skin is just about done. We have a bit to go this morning on the back of the tail. This was a huge thing to finally finish.   Adding more crew members and the surf board.   My wife thought the surf board was dumb.  She's wong!   Bubbles along the keel. I'm hoping we can get a few oars done today. We've been neglecting them. We also have more cords to camouflage. it will be a busy day.  |

 We also got the patch you sent us up and displayed in our F-22 display. The weapons bay doors are still working!   We are also waiting on a magnetic sensor for our Marine One display.  One failed and we had to build a new chain tensioner, as the original was destroyed. The tensioner is up and working, just waiting on a new sensor so we can get the door working again.

Update 5/20 Seniors are gone.
 We have a week and two days left with students. The dragon keel carving is going well with stain. We are going to add some texture to it, once the stain is done.  I think we are going to do something like this in the negative spaces along the neck and on the face.  Friday we got both the remaining legs installed, as well as our Dragon Rider up on his mount. This is a huge weight off my chest. What we have left is manageable, and to most, won't be immediately obvious. Many smaller details with the crew and dragon. Mural needs addressed, but I think we can manage that. The castle gate suffered a problem Friday morning. We broke the mount for the motor. My Senior Robotic students say they are coming in today to fix it. Hopefully they will and not leave us hanging on it. We may move the castle into position with out it. The Dragon Rider needs weapons, his hand, and a few more details, but he looks great up there. They eyes are absolutely crazy scary.       Video of the heart and lungs moving. We have a bit of tweak in the program that needs to happen. Occasionally, the motors don't have enough power to get them into the ending position and they get hung up. The students had adjusted this setting 3 times already getting a bit more power to the motors, but we need one more adjustment. The Robotics team this year did do an excellent job, covering just this kind of design standard, but there were others who worked on the gate that did not take that to heart. The gate got rushed at the end. The helicopter is now working again. The magnetic sensor is what failed, and caused the failure. New tensioner will definitely not fail, but it's not as elegant or as refined as the original. It's rough. We installed the new sensor today, and got it running again. |

Students worked to get more details on the crew members. We still have a few weapons to display through the crew on the ship.  Students have been signing the project through out the last few days, as we get a few minutes.  We began adding fog and lights below the castle. We can still pull the castle away from the wall when we are ready to install the gate.    Oars are coming together. We should be painting them today, and figuring out how to display them.  Dragon keel is about ready for texture routering. (one of these days, I'll get one of these pics in focus.  )

Update 5/22 I'm doubting we have many students coming next Tues and Wednesday, the final days of school for students, so we are running out of time this week to get things all done. We are close though.
 @pasquale91 We did a little update on the "Investors" for the F-22 display. Thank you again for the awesome patch!  We added foam to the butts of the spikes running along our dragon's back. Yesterday, we painted them. We need a bit more stain on there before we are all done with that.  Shields and weapons were added yesterday to our crew. A few more fixes, like the axe falling and melting fingers around weapons and we will be done with this. The mural clouds also got done yesterday afternoon. That is a big thing to have finished.    Signatures along the bottom of our longship.  Our dragon keel carving is about all that is left to still install. The paint is drying, but we may get it fitted later this afternoon. Not crazy happy with our scales using the router, but it is what it is.  We finally added @Cargo horn donation to our Dragon rider's hand yesterday. Students melted his fingers to wrap around the horn. We also added some fishing line around it, so it can't fall out of his grip in the future.  Castle got it's own dragon and a bit more fog around the base. We need to paint the structure supports inside the castle black so they don't stand out quite so much.

Pretty late in the year, but we are not happy with the dragon keel size and shape when on the ship. We are in the middle of two options. The woods teacher is trying to slim it down and make it fit better, and we are making one out of foam.....from taxidermy forms.

I am not sure I'm seeing the scale right when they're not next to each other but won't it will be tucked up under the dragon's leg and not too visible? |

We didn't get a ton of work done yesterday, mostly some smaller details. I'll grab more pics today. We got started on our "Cover The Earth" Sherwin-Williams logo. This is a small thank you to our local Cody Store and all the help they have been this year.  It's a bit odd, but we put up some of our extra dragon eyes into the smoke plume. We were blending in the edges just a bit whee the hot glue was showing. We may add a bit more smoke around them to make them less obvious. Or maybe not.  For our dragon head on our longship......I'm hoping the woodshop can slim down the original and we can use that, but if it doesn't happen, we may go with this. Update 5/24
It will be fast and crazy today with the short schedule. Robotics came in yesterday and did a quick program change to the heart. It was working perfectly till it wasn't. I think the motor mount came loose and the chain loosened. It locked up and derailed. I'm hoping we can get it up and running again today. We also got the castle gate going, but it needs a program adjustment for over all travel. Not sure I'll see that today or not. We did finish up our Sherwin-Williams logo yesterday.  We got another new crew member up on the ropes. Looks pretty good. Stance and expression are awesome.  Dragon eyes in the clouds got touched up so they don't stand out so much.  As to the dragon keel head. The foam version got fitted. This was a first look. Needs to be thinner.   Some elk antlers added and the chest thinned a bit.  We began adding paint as a base coat. We plan to oil paint this with similar colors as the wooden version.  We had a snow storm come through yesterday and knocked out power for an hour. Made finals in some classes a bit tougher. We continued to work with the window light.  For eyes, we played around with the blue glass stones we used in the dragon rider. This adds a bit of continuity to the composition, and we don't have to wait for them to be made.  Sophia, our Duck Stamp winner took on adding the epoxy around the glass.

Could have the music department record some viking sounding tunes, something Celtic like Heather Alexander to play in around the castle. Some new small speakers have amazing range including bass, as we've seen in mobile phones, nearly invisible speakers can sound not "tinny" now with advances in enclosures and amps, it's pretty amazing. |
