| I went with a short length of pull stock (~12in) just due to preference and balance with a shorter 14in bbl. When I shortened it, I went through a 4-day shotgun course to see how I liked it. I ended up smacking my nose with the thumb of my right hand when the shotgun recoiled because of the shorter length of pull. That is why I am moving to a pistol gripped short LOP stock whenever I get a chance. |

YMMV, but I prefer a pistol grip...feels more secure in your hand, and while not likely to happen, if a douchebag were to get close enough to try grabbing it before I got a shot off, it would be tougher to grab and pull away from me, and easier to keep my finger on the trigger.
Pistol grip gives you a tighter stance...your right arm is more tucked in with a pistol grip than out to the side with a standard stock... To me -- the pistol grip makes it more maneuverable going around corners Like I said -- YMMV ETA: Poll failed to load |
Depends. If you're talking about pistol grip only stocks, might as well get a Deagle wit da beams, ya gangster foo
If it is on an 870, pistol grip stock is fine if you prefer it. I hate pistol grip stocks on Mossbergs because it makes the safety harder to manipulate. Either way, AR is always the superior HD choice. |

I really like the pistol grip on the Benelli M1 Super 90. For some reason that stock really points well for me. Most other shotguns that have stocks with a pistol grip feel weird to me.
I'd say that pistol grips will make maneuvering easier, because of the tendancy to keep your elbow down. But they will most likely have more felt recoil in your strong hands wrist. Benelli has a very padded rubberized grip which I'm guessing was designed to reduce this. I'm used to shooting an AR, so having a similar stock setup translates easier. Still, I shoot my normal stocked trap gun very well. So I'm not really tied down to one stock type. I do find that I can't find a good way to hold that shotgun at the ready for extended periods, which I think a pistol grip might alleiviate. Mainly it's personal preference. |

Pistol grip. Easier to butt stroke. Ever actually tried a real buttstroke holding a pistol grip?
As to the OP, If I only have a front bead, I'm a lot faster with a traditional stock. Easier to reference on my hand to line it up right. Plus it keeps my brain in "shotgun" mode and not "rifle/carbine." If that makes sense. |
I prefer a standard stock. My 11-87 came with a pistol grip speed feed and it just feels awkward. It took a few rounds of trap to really get used to it. Nothing pisses off fuds with overunders worse than taking an 18" 7 shot pistol gripped shotgun to the clay range. Well except shooting better than them with a gun they hate. It's a shame I won't be able to take that gun back to the trap range soon. |

Whatever you shoot best. Personally I don't really like pistol grips on shotguns, they just feel awkward to me. Thats cause they dont belong there. IMO its like reaching into a girls pants and finding a dick. Niiiiiice!
Pistol grip, because all the liberal lawmakers think it's easier to shoot from the hip and blow off more rounds faster!

My go to house gun is an 879 with speedfeed 4s stock, scattergun tech tracloc sights, surefire forend and a side saddle. 6 rounds of number 4 buck in the tube, 6 slugs on the side saddle. That shotgun hits where I aim and goes bang everytime. I have a Benelli m1super90 and 2 930 SPX they are for fun, in a fight the 870 is what I use.
I prefer the pistol grip stock because I can operate the gun and it is easier to control for me. |

Standard stock. As short as you can manage.
Holding the shotgun on target while reloading is 1,000x easier with a standard stock than with a pistol grip. It's also the only logical choice for use with Mossbergs, which have superior control placement, but ONLY with a standard stock. Depending on who you ask, the standard stock is also more natural-pointing. Pistol grips are better for use with body armor, depending on how much freedom of movement the armor gives you. |
