I was looking at getting a scope for my AR for getting into 3-gun. Right now I just have the standard iron sights and 55 year old eyes, so need reading glasses and distance vision is OK. Found the Aimpoint PRO, which is supposed to be designed for LE type activities so figured this would be a good choice. Checking the stats of the scope it 1X magnification. Looked at their other scopes of the same style and all are 1X. You can purchase a 3X magnification add on, but that costs more than the scope itself, so would be getting around $1K and I can not really afford the $400+ for the PRO. Just wondering if 1X magnification is good for 3-gun or if I should find something else that will allow me to go to the maximum magnification if needed for the 100 yard targets?
Thanks for your help, and if you have any suggestions for a good scope that isn't too expensive (had to buy wife a whole new front room furniture set for Christmas, so da money be gone, but still have plastic with a little room left on them!!) :} |

Alot of it also depends on where you shoot and how the matches are set up. If you go with the Aimpoint or similar 1X optics then you can shoot Tac Irons/Limited division. So you would be competing against people with non magnified rifles. If you were to put on the magnifier then you will be in Tac Optics and competing against people with 1-4 or higher optics.
Also look at the matches that you plan to shoot and what the typical distances are for shots there. ie if you only shoot local matches that never have targets past 100 yards then the aimpoint will be an advantage for you. On the flip side at a match where there are targets scattered from 200-500 yards then the aimpoint may not help your game. If it were me I'd go with a 1-4 scope, there are a few good scopes listed above that will not break the bank. A true 1X optic with daytime bright illumination with allow you to shoot both eyes open just like the aimpoint. Also make sure that you get a good mount to go with it! |
