| I have an opportunity to get 2 ceredyne S.A.P.I. plates manufactured in 2005, and they were issued but not used, but my question is what are the kevlar backer options that are I needed, where are they cheapest at. I am on a very limited budget. Or are they needed at all? This will be my 1st set of plates, and is a good starting point for me, and my budget. I have a guality plate carrier, and until I get my funds right for a new set of plates, these will have to do. I'm fairly positive they are in good condition, as they are only temporary and SHTF for now, and most likely loaner in the future, or for training/ classes later. I have been looking for the backers online and only got more confused to if I actually need them. Were they used with backers when issued overseas? Thanks in advance. I just need honest and serious advice. |

Both the SAPI and ESAPI must be used in conjunction with soft armor to achieve the ballistics rating. There are some privately made stand alone plates that can be used without soft armor but they are obviously more expensive than gov issue SAPIs.
Are you using a plate carrier? if so you will need to get soft armor backers, they are the same dimensions as the plate and fit in the plate carrier pocket. if you are using a armor carrier, one that can fit a BALCS style cut go with that if you can find one at an affordable price, but if you cant just buy some used police level IIIA soft body armor, its not the exact dimensions as a BALCS but pretty close and will provide the same level of protection, sometimes for as cheap as $50. |
