I saw a post for a guy that is building a 6.8 spc SBR.  He said that he was planning on using the yhm Phantom 308 so that he could use the can on everything from a .308 to his 5.56.  I noticed on YHM's site that they state that the can can be attached to the corresponding flash hider for 5.56.  Is this common or recommended for the QD suppressors?  Is it usually acceptable to just attach a larger caliber can to a gun?  What are the consequences (i.e. baffle strikes, less sound suppression etc)?

Sorry for the probably basic question.  Other than knowing that they are legal and liking the idea of a suppressor I am naive to the subject but would like to learn.  I have a similar build on the back burner and would contemplate this route if it is a decent route since I have both calibers and would prefer buying only one suppressor.  I looked in the everyting you want to know post and didn't see this question covered so don't flame me too hard

I have a pair of YHM quick-detach cans; one is 556 and the other is 762.  YHM specifically makes the 556 QD mount so that the 762 can will mount to it.  The mounts do not work vice-versa.   i.e. you cannot mount a 556 can onto the 762 mount; that would be a problem most likely resulting in a major/catastrophic baffle strike.  The 762 QD flashider mount is about 1/2" longer than the 556 mount, so the 556 can doesn't have enough room to reach the threads and engage them.  I don't know how AAC or anybody else's systems work, but I know the YHM system is designed specifically to allow the 762 cans to be mounted up to 556 rifles/mounts.

I run my 762 can on 556 rifles every now and then and it sounds fine.  Two small benefits I see are that you have a larger bore with a little more room to help prevent a baffle strike and the other being the larger internal volume can help absorb a little more of the gas thus directing less of it back into the shooter's face.

I use a 7.62 gemtech hvt-qd on my 6.8 and my 5.56 even a .223 bolt action rifle.  I bought the G5 (.223) muzzle devices so I can use the 7.62 can on those rifles.  It supresses the rifles pretty good.  I dont have to wear ear protection  when shooting them
