These guys, Mitchell's Mausers, have a really bad reputation of scrubbing unmatching (most likely all Russian Capture) K98s and restamping them to match, along with stamping most likely fake "Death Head" and "SS Rune" markings, along with the even more ridiculous offer of "REAL" K98 Snipers (I mean really, if they were really real and this company has been in business this long, why do they still offer them? Wouldn't they be sold out by now?). They take something that does actually have a history, and scrub/ sand it down and make it look "pretty," (i.e. polish/reblue/restain the parts of the rifle) to the consumer. If you're looking for an overpriced "nice-looking" historically inaccurate shooter K98, then buy from them. If you're looking for something retaining some history, then look elsewhere. Try Gunbroker or Classic Arms has a few nice K98s left (though not posted right now), and there are other places. Anywhere but Mitchell's. My best advice would be to head on over to the K98 forum on Gunboards.com. You'll never find a more knowledgeable group of people that know K98s and then some. They can point you in the right direction. Hope you can find that K98. Good Luck!

My apologies, I should have posted my own evidence to support this claim. However, I can guarantee that if you go to any milsurp forum and take a look at a picture of an original, un-messed-with K98, you'll first notice that Mitchell's Mausers K98s look SO far from an original its ridiculous, especially with their polished bolts and pretty obvious rebluing. Then if you look closer you'll notice that serial stampings don't even come close to original factory stampings; and don't even get me started on how many, if not all have the serial on the side of the buttstock....
