| what is the civilian component of the g36 and where can i purcahse it. also: hows it on ammo price and accuracy. thanks |

There is no true civilian model of the G36. HK hates american civilians. The closest thing you'll find is an SL-8 and, TBH, it's way overpriced for its capabilities. Nothing an M1A or FAL couldnt do better at that price, or an AR-15 for half that price. |

HK never imported a full-fledged G36, but did import a drastically emasculated version called the SL8. Now the SL8 can be modified to be almost a G36 minus the full auto feature. The total price will be well over $2000 for the rifle and the modification. Occasionally you can find them on gunbroker already converted. There is one on gunbroker currently for $4600, but that seems awfully high. The SL8 have shown a tendency to develop cracks in the receiver, so be forewarned. WRONG HK Hates American politicians who have banned their products three times in 15 years. We can not have a true semi auto G36 thanks to the 1989 import ban. Because of the 89 ban HK had to turn the 91 into the 91-1 and later SR9. The SR9 and PSG-1 were banned by Bubba Clinton in 1994 in his AWB. What people forget is that HK tired to sell new models of the SR9 in 1997-98 and this too was banned for import by Bill Clinton with a sweeping Executive Order. The reason why Bubba banned the new HK SR9s is because they had no AWB features, but it could use a high cap G3 mag. The same Clinton EO banned the Steyr USR, but Steyr was able to import 3,000 before Bubba warmed up his pen. Now comes the G36 and UMP, and HK wants to sell these to Americans, but because they lost millions thanks to the import ban, AWB and EO....HK had to change a lot of the features on the G36 to comply with BATF import rules. What they had to do was had a thumb hole stock and make sure the gun could only have a 10 round single stack mag. In Europe HK sells several models of the SL8 and they use G36 mags and they look much better than what was sold here. Also, the SL8 cracking issue is on the SL8-1 not the G36 or European models. The SL8-1 was not a hit here, and HK stopped making the SL8 and USC after two years. http://www.hkpro.com/sl8.htm |
VERY nice! I want one SO bad. I might have to buy an SL8 and in like 5-6 years MAY finally have it done

Well, the cracking issues had to do with the original bolt in the SL8-1. That can be solved by buying a bolt kit from Top Notch. I'm 6'3" and the LOP on my weapon is perfect. The LOP issues some people were having was due to the installation of the Top Notch G36 stock. It made the LOP for MOST people too long. An HK "C" stock can solve that issue for MOST people. The one pictured has a "C" stock. The G36 is not a perfect weapon. Neither is the AR-15 or the Steyr AUG. But I LOVE all of them! They all have their positives and negatives. And they all are FUN to shoot! |

The G36 wouldn't be sold to us anyways due to HK's policy of not selling military weapons to civilians. If it were importable, it would still be Agency purchase only. The G36 is a decent gun based on the AR180 gas system. It's only down fall is the polymer. It's apparent that when suppressed, it can't hold high cyclic rates of fire. The trunions literally melt and the barrel sags. A very small issue for the majority of the G36's users though. Aside from that, I'd never own any type of weapon that had an internal optic, especially one with out a back up sighting system. I wouldn't consider the G36 for military duty or SHTF, but I'd still like to have one. |
The whole dual optic handle can be removed in a matter of seconds with a screwdriver. Then one could attached a KAC long scope flat-top picatinny rail with fold-down 600 meter rear sight and folding front sight. This rail and folding back-up sights were specifically made for the HK G36 series. That is the configuration that the U.S. Capital police use on their HK G36K's with an Aimpoint Comp M2 sight. |
Oh how I loathe that bastard Clinton... |

I had the opportunity to fire a few G36's when I worked with the Bundeswehr on TF KBAR in Afghanistan in 2002. It has a reliable piston type system which was reportedly based on the AR18 system. The dual optic system sucks and most soldiers did not like it. German SOF troops are seen using the Eotech in its stead frequently. I was also told the magazines will take a set if you leave them loaded for more than a few weeks. I didnt like the folding stock on it. The weapon is very light, seems flimsy to me but it seems to have held up well in German service. I much prefer the AUG system over this. If you want one you had better be getting to it. SL-8s are drying up and the conversion kits are getting hard to find. They were only made by Top Notch. It does take a good bit of work to convert one over. I owned one conversion for awhile. They generally sell for 2500-3K for the well done ones. The TN conversion kit modifies your SL-8 to use M16 magazines. To use G36 magazines, you have to buy a separate magwell and have more milling done on the SL8 upper receiver. Gordon Miller seems to have a number of G36 parts and accessories in stock. Robert RTG has some too. |
The G3 was HK's first battle rifle for the German army. The G3 was built from the 1950s until the G36 replaced it in 1997-98. The G3 was in 7.62X51. Hk sold the civilian G3 to the U.S. with the HK G3 semi, HK 41, and the most common Hk 91 in .308. |
+1 Some Germans are a bit stuck up and they view us as gun-toting, uncivilized "Amis". In their minds we are not professional and responsible enough to own their overpriced rifles. In their minds only the police and military are worthy of owning weapons (some things haven’t changes since the end of the Third Reich) |
