I've got a 16" version from DSA and I am absolutely smitten with it. It kicks a$$. I am so impressed with it I have convinced the wife to let me get a full size version. You won't regret either length weapon. It just depends on your needs or wants.

If you are only getting one, I'd get the full size. You loose some oomph in the .308 below 18" and the moving around length really is not much more.

I had a 21" model. With the muzzle device, it did seem like a 5-foot broom stick. I went with an 18" model, best of both worlds- good balance and not much velocity loss.

I like the 17.35" barrel (shortest FN Para model barrel length). My Para would be ungodly nose-heavy if it had a 21" barrel.

I built my first one with a 21" barrel, and then built a couple 17.3" carbines. Then a friend liked the carbine's so much, he brought me his full length to get cutdown to 17.3" carbine and I went and cut down my 21" at the same time.

I have a 16" para and a 21" standard, and the full size just languishes in the safe now.

 I didn't change the gas system length, just shortened the barrels and opened up the gas ports.

Maybe that was it. I had a 16" that consistently shot 2" groups all a foot low at 100 yards. I had to use an Izzy rear site and file the front sight to get on target. It was so far off that I thought the barrel was canted. It wasn't. |

Yup - that's as good as it gets, IMO - after building a couple of full lengths and carbines, my next build will be an 18".... - georgestrings |

That's typical for a shorter FAL. The round gets out of the barrell quite a bit sooner with 5" less length, and the rifle hasn't recoiled as much,putting the shot quite a bit lower than intended.Run into the same thing with handguns and wildly different loads, like a light .38 in a .357, .44 Special in a Magnum, etc. When I had my 16" FAL, using the standard sights, I think I had to run the rear up to the 400 meter mark to get on at 100. Also had to put an Izzy sight on it from DSA and fixed the problem. |

The 18/17.35" barrel FAL's are very nice handling rifles. I don't mind the 21, but the 17.35 is really nice.

Maybe I'm the odd one out here,,
I wanted the max velocity/power the round is capable of, , so I got the longest barrel I could. 24" |

I had to use a shorter front sight post for the 18" FAL as well.

I have a DSA STG58 carbine and it is a fabulous firearm for the $$$. Built like a tank, reasonably accurate, utterly reliable with all kinds of ammo. I like the shorter barrel for offhand shooting. Now if I couuld only get the DSA triger smoothed out..................
