What does it take to anodize? Is an easy Do It Yourself project?

No, it is not simple.

You can't set-up a new chromic acid line anymore.  Dang EPA, that was the best anodizing process.

With some time and money I could probably set-up a simple boric-sulfuric acid anodizing line using boiling DI water as a sealant.

Don't forget to add shredded aluminum foil to the new tank before you try anodizing any parts.  That is, unless you WANT to see a part that looks like a 200-pound dog chewed on it.
