Heres the story that goes with the foto ...

Bull's Eye - U.S. Marine PFC. Jerry D. Goff of St. Louis MO. examines a split barrel of his M-14 rifle which was hit square in the bore by Viet Cong sniper bullet during exchange of fire with guerrillas at My Song, south of DaNang. Goff was slightly wounded in the face by the freak occurrence.

I have to say it sounds like military, news BS. Nothing more than an obstructed barrel.

Certainly looks like an obstructed bore to me. In the confusion of battel, it would be easy to confuse an obstructed bore with some other cause.

I bet his underwear didn't go unscathed, though!

Sounds like bullshit to me. Did they find the VC bullet in the bore? If not, bullshit.

It the bullet hit square in the bore it would have travelled down it.  Maybe start turning the other direction from the rifling, or even shed the jacket. The barrel is much to tough to be damaged by a soft little bullet.

Yeah, total crap.  An incoming round is not going to peel a barrel back like that.  Only internal pressure can cause that, like a barrel obstruction.

Why don't one of you naysayers call Mr. Jerry Goff and ask him?

I found a Gerald D Goff born 1944 in Missouri on Zabasearch. That puts him around the right age to have been in VN.
