If image doesn't load try right clickng view image, the roadrunner server is acting up lately.  The pic is there.

It's on the reciever, circular, has been defaced.  What was it?  Why was it removed?  Anyone?

It's a sweet M39 BTW.

I could be wrong about this but I think I was reading somewhere that there was a swastika on it. I guess from the finns were allied to to germany back then.

The Finns used captured Russian Mosins and reused the bolts and receivers.  Thats where the hammer and sickle were.

There are no swastica marked Finn Mosins.

The Finns removed the Russian Imperial eagle crest on some of the receivers.  One others, they left them.

BTW, nice MN39 with a SAKO barrel, too.

Looking under the tang should find a date before 1917, so it was made Czarist then unmade in revolutionary fervor.

Tang shows 1898 Tula.

So did the Finns remove the hammer and sickle...?  They used that back in 1898?

This dimple is where the Russian imperial eagle was removed. The hammer and sickle were on the barrel shank, not the receiver, and were not used until the communists took over. My M39 has this dimple, and it is built on a 1910 Tula receiver.

Here is the eagle on my Remington M91.

ETA: This dimple appears to be a Finnish, not Soviet, phenomenon.

See column C, row 2.

Apparently the Soviets stamped the hammer and sickle over the eagle whereas the Finns removed the eagle alltogether. Soviet made receivers will obviously not have the eagle, and therefore do not bear the hammer and sickle.

Nothing was removed in Revolutionary Fervor by the Finns.  They created a democracy after killing as many Bolo Finns as necessary in the Finn civil war.  The Civil Guard was a powerful right-wing military force until Stalin forced its dissolution following Finland's defeat in the '39-40 Winter War.
