Let us suppose for the moment that I had decided to use paint pens to
fill in some roll marks on a lower. Let us further suppose that acetone
only smears the shit around and makes a huge mess, and that this lower
now looks "cloudy" due to the white oil based paint.

What product do I use to wipe the smeared paint off?

Yup.  Hose it down.  I like to oil the shit out of my guns afterwards, then blow the excess off with the air compressor.  Wipe with a rag and return to storage.

I bought brake cleaner as the nuclear option and mineral spirits. The mineral spirits worked like a charm.

So let it be known, if you intend to use sharpie paint pens on a lower, wipe down with mineral spirits, not acetone.
