I have a SA M1A standard that I just bought new. Today was the first time firing the rifle. I picked up a battle pack of Lithuauain 7.62 to shoot. It seems that every 4th round I get a FTE. just the slightest tap with the cleaning rod down the barrel and the fired case drops out of the chamber. Is this rifle suffering from teething problems or do you think its the ammo. I havent tried any other ammo yet. I had cleaned the rifle well before shooting. Second problem. Rear sight. Does the windage knob supposed to have the clicks like the elevation knob? It seems that the rear sight knob turns 1/4 of a turn before you feel the click. Thanks in advance |

You probably have a not so good extractor and a tight chamber. I've never had a problem like this but some guys here have said replacing the factory extractor with a GI unit solved the problem. The gun will loosen up once you've fired a few hundered rounds through it. There is a screw in the center of the windage knob. Is it loose? |
| I had THIS EXACT PROBLEM. Some guys say its a bad extractor but i dont believe that. ALL i did was clean the chamber extremely well with one of the ratchet type bore brushes. After that i made absolutely sure it was free of any preserving gunk in the chamber. Guys say its because the chambers are made too tight but if u ask me, thats a good thing. After about 60 rounds my gun was firing flawlessly... and ive never been happier with my m1a. on the other note, it hink your elevation know is fine... make sure u read the manual and the letter that comes in your SA box. |

I've run GGG Lithgianian fine in my 6 year old Supermatch. BUT on resizing/reloading..abou 20-30% don;t fit in my case gauge. There's either a spec problem with the base or rim imho. My Extractor came off firing some a few weeks ago. I installed new bolt internals, spings, firing pin, ejector and milled extractor and it's doing fine now. I'd also suggest firing different ammo thru the gun to break it in. Springfield has an excellent lifetime warranty, but USGI and upgraded Extractors/Internals are cheap enough so I just changed them all out. |
Yeah, whenever you try just one type of ammo, it's hard to diagnose. I think what the others have said is probably true though. And I'm sure cleaning the chamber real good may help. My headspace is pretty tight too. But I haven't had a problem feeding yet. But the only surplus I have used is Portugese and SouthAfrican. I would just try some Federal AE and see how she does with that too. Maybe let her wear in with some of that. |
| First clean your chamber with a patch and some JB's. I don't think your ammo is on the approved list by SA - however that really never stopped most folks - try some surplus Aussie or So. African and see if it works better. Best combination would be your own reloads, Black Hills or Federal GM depending on the depth of your pocketbook. |
